seven things to do this weekend | 31st march – 2nd april

Is the rain ever going to stop? Statistically, yes, but until then, dash those rainy-day blues away with a fun-packed weekend full of music, food, art, dark comedy, and, of course, chocolate. And if you’re running the marathon or 10k this weekend (good luck!), there are free treats for finishers a-plenty from Brighton’s best indies, including a free beer at Capsule Records and Unbarred Brewery, and £1 coffees at Fika Sussex.

Chocs away
To refashion a popular ad jingle, once we choc, we can’t stop and we started our run-up to Easter EARLY this year. If you’re yet to get started or need some egg-spiration, we’d recommend heading to Sussex chocolatier Montezuma’s this Saturday. Chocolatier Caitlin will be personalising Easter eggs (we particularly love their chocolate hens) there in exchange for a donation to child rights organisation Children on The Edge. For more Easter treats, check out our guide here.

Room to rant
Brighton charity AudioActive, which nurtures emerging musical talent from all backgrounds, is presenting a Room to Rant event at the Green Door Store on Friday. There’s hip hop from Dr Syntax and CMPND, as well as up-and-coming musicians, a panel talk, an art exhibition. You’ll also have a chance to meet the team behind Room to Rant, a Sussex rap and spoken word initiative for young men, creating safe spaces for them to “get stuff off their chest” via free workshops led by professional rappers.

Drum roll, please
Have you been to The Verdict, Brighton’s lovely gem of a jazz club yet (we’re big fans of their Thursday Jazz Jam)? If not, this weekend’s the perfect opportunity to check it out. Saturday sees the album launch party of professional drummer – and Verdict manager – Tristan Banks. Tristan’s performed for heaps of seriously big names over the years, but he’s now showcasing his and his quartet’s talent (drums, woodwind, piano, bass) on his first album, the live-recorded View from Above. You won’t be surprised to hear it’s a jazz record, but you can hear touches of Latin and fusion influences too. What’s your Verdict?
Saturday 1st April, 7pm (doors), 8.30pm (start); £19.67
159 Edward Street, Brighton, BN2 0JB

Room with a (private) view
Beachside art gallery Two Kats and a Cow are launching their spring show with a (not-so-private) private view this Saturday and you can join them for a browse of their new works, a glass of something sparkling and music from DJ Schwing Doctor. You’ll find joyful new paintings, prints and drawings from the core team (Katty McMurray and Kathryn Matthews, aka the Two Kats, and cow painter extraordinaire John Marshall), as well as work from guest artists, potter Mike Levy and wirework artist Emma Bird. If you can’t make it on Saturday, the exhibition continues for the rest of the year from Fridays to Sundays.

Putting the terror in the (book) tour
Did you love the seriously underrated Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace? If the answer’s no, you can stop reading now, but for the yea-sayers or curious, you’re in luck as Matthew Holness’ fictional horror author is appearing in Brighton this Sunday. Marenghi, aka the “world’s greatest Frighternerman, Darkscribe, Doomsage (plus Man-Shee)”, is in Brighton as part of a book tour for TerrorTome, his long-lost, multi-volume horror epic. Expect readings, a Q&A and a hell-load of fun.
