Things to do in Brighton this weekend | 22nd – 24th March

So it’s apparently spring now. And yes, we’ve got the gorgeous daffodils, cherry blossom, and more, but aside from that one glorious day of sunshine this week, we’ve been mostly bathed in saggy-bottomed mist. Weather grumbles over, we’re looking forward to a weekend of arty, music-y, beery fun (with a side of shopping).

Ready, steady, (art) battle

Where do you get a mix of exciting live painting, DJs and excellent craft beer? Art Battle, of course! Set up by the guys behind Do Not Obstruct (who turned the cab run below Brighton station into a must-visit temporary exhibition), the event pits talented artists against one another in an epic paint-off against the clock. Twelve artists will compete in three 20-minute rounds to whip up works of art as they try to win the audience’s hearts and snag the Art Battle crown. At the end, all the work gets sold off in a silent auction, so you might even get to take an original home. The event’s in the evening, but you can head over from 11am to check out the indie art sale, featuring loads of local artists, such as Haus of Lucy, Little Papa Dollhouse, Cassette Lord and more, and meet some of the night’s competitors. Game on!
Saturday 23rd March; doors open at 6pm, first battle at 7pm; from £10.55

Embark on an immersive sensory journey

Sometimes reality gets a bit too much and we feel the need to escape from the non-stop chatter of our brains. But until we actually have an off switch for that (patent pending), transportative installations seem like an excellent alternative. Welcome to artist Jim Sanders’ studio, aka the Spirit House. You’ll enter this mysterious immersive world through veils – symbolising the boundary between our conscious and subconscious worlds – to experience ‘a journey for the senses’ via art, live performance and music, film and scent. Oh, and some tea and boozy beverages. Get ready for some magic.
Saturday 23rd – Sunday 24th March; hourly 2 – 9pm and 2 – 7pm, respectively; £11.55
Spirit House, 12 Bear Road, Brighton BN2 4DA

Have some birthday beers

No, not your birthday (unless it is, in which case, happy birthday!), but Bison Beer’s. They’re turning the ripe old age of nine and, to celebrate they’re having a party AND launching a new beer with Polly’s Brew Co, the Pirates IPA, a hefty six-percenter. As well as enjoying some of the best views and an “actual Bison cake”, you’ll have the chance to win bucketloads of beers all night via twists on nostalgic party games – pin the tail on the Bison or pass the beery parcel, anyone? And DJs James Curry and Dan Walters will be on the decks, spinning disco, boogie, soul and funk. For something a little less boozy, you can also join the Bison gang on a nine-mile birthday hike on Sunday.
Saturday 23rd March; 6pm – 11pm; free

Celebrate the full moon with a free beach party

Somehow it’s full moon time again, which means Ruby Moon’s monthly lunar celebrations are back. There are tunes from Ben Williams and mindful bendiness with Yoga in the Lanes as you bid farewell to the last month with a fun evening of yoga, dance, paddleboarding and – if you’re brave enough – swimming.
