book now | betsy: wisdom of a brighton whore

This pacy – and sweary – one-woman show of “sex, seduction and survival” from local theatre group Something Underground is returning this November before heading to New York.

Written and directed by Jonathan Brown, this gripping play takes us back to 1800s Brighton when the Prince Regent began frequenting the city, sparking an upturn in the market for prostitution. And we thought Harry was a naughty prince.

Set against the backdrop of Brighton’s hidden underworld, the tale of the eponymous Betsy flits between her life now and when she was growing up, with can’t-take-your-eyes-off-her actor Isabella McCarthy-Somerville bringing to life a multitude of typically unheard characters, effortlessly moving from saucy to chilling.

Staged at the brilliantly evocative Brighton Fishing Museum loft, spine-tingling musical soundscapes all help to evoke an intriguing, often-forgotten underworld.

We first saw the play during its sell-out run in 2019 and again this year when they won the International Fringe Encore award – and BOTI’s must-see recommendation.

Want more Prince Regent-era antics? The company are also putting on The Silent Stream (Wisdom of a Brighton Whore Part 1) at the fishing museum on Thursday 17th November.

Written and performed by Jonathan Brown, this raucous first instalment recounts the true adventures of how the hedonistic Prince Regent, aka George IV, aka the OG party prince, came to Brighton, partook of the city’s women and fought nature to build his pavilion.

Thursday 17th – Sunday 20th November; from £10
