Things to do this Easter weekend | 29th March – 1st April

The highly anticipated Easter weekend (hello, four-day break, longer days and, if we’re lucky, some spring sunshine) is here and we’ve got a bunny load of fun to help you make the most out of your mini (egg)-break. And no, it’s not just about chocolate (although we’ve got lots of that too).

Discover an Easter special

If you’re not in the queue at Raven’s Bakery to snag what are quite possibly the city’s best hot cross buns (open Friday and Saturday), then there are loads of other egg-straordinary specials to tempt you this Easter. Top of our list again are Oeuf‘s. They are literally called ‘Egg’, after all. This year, the Bravo winner of Brighton’s best brunch has teamed up with Cielo Cakery to produce some brilliantly OTT specials, such as Bueno chocolate cookie frumpets and an iced hot cross bun latte for starters. We’re also all over Bravo best restaurant winner Terre à Terre‘s Café Crème Egg liquid pudding, Cat Burglar Dough Co‘s Easter doughnuts (find them at the ‘doughnut hole’ at Yeastie Boys Pizza on George Street, Hove), Alberta’s breakfast hot cross bun – the beast is stuffed to the hilt with fried chicken, black pudding, fried egg and maple mustard, and Fika‘s blue cheese, fried chicken, streaky bacon and egg-packed hot cross bun (Hove and UberEats only). And people wonder why Easter is our favourite holiday of the year!

Get stuck into the cocktails

Is it really a Bank Holiday without a Mama’s Margarita pop-up at T@Coffee Shops? Not in our book anyway. We’re rather partial to a marg – and Mama’s make an excellent one, perfect for seeing you into the long weekend. Ten out of ten to their bright pink boilersuit ‘uniforms’ too. As well as the ole classic, there may even be a rhubarb or a chilli marg on the menu! Tim Walker from Love Is the Message Brighton is on the decks to help get the party started.
Friday 29th March; from 6pm; happy hour from 6pm – 7pm; book a table or walk in

Check out a new bar-restaurant

There’s a(nother) new bar and restaurant in town! Landing on the indie foodie hub that is Preston Street, No No Please combines that sweet spot where dining room meets bar and lounge. They’ll be serving house-made small-batch cocktails (like the Sea and T, a samphire-infused G&T) and South East Asian-inspired small plates. It certainly looks like the kind of place where you could settle in for a good few hours. What else? It’s walk-ins only and they’re dog- (and Easter Bunny) friendly.
From Thursday 28th March from 5pm; then Thursdays – Saturdays, midday – midnight; Sundays, midday – 10pm and Mondays, 5pm – 10pm
30 – 31, Preston Street, Brighton BN2 1HQ

Race a spaniel in Lewes

The Lewes Arms encapsulates everything that’s brilliant about the lively Sussex town just outside Brighton. The 220-year-old boozer is well known for its fantastically quirky events and Easter Sunday’s Spaniel Racing is no exception. Bring your hound – any hound, they’re not spaniel-exclusive – and race them down the lane by the pub in an entirely fun and utterly cruelty-free fashion. The dogs’ incentive? Sausages. Said bangers are usually attached to a lucky member of staff dressed up as a hare (yep, the one that drew the short straw). Trust us, it’s a lot of fun. They’ve also got a beer festival running all weekend, featuring local breweries Beak, Burning Sky, Unbarred, Only With Love and Hand Brew Co. While you’re there, we’d recommend a bite to eat at Dill and a mooch around From Victoria, as well as the town’s many other excellent indie and antiques shops.
Sunday 31st March; register from midday to race at 2pm
1 Mount Place, Lewes BN7 1YH

Let music be the food of love – and Bank Holidays

If you head over to our friends at Bella Union on Friday, you’ll be greeted with a special Easter edition of their Sandwich Sessions. Yep, an intimate concert AND a sarnie! Hypnotic Brighton band The Leaning will be playing a deconstruction of their tracks with new instrumentation and the brilliant Earl’s will be providing the sandwiches. Added bonus? It’s all free!

Celebrate the 80s this Good Friday

The legendary It Is Still 1985 party gang are turning sixteen! To celebrate that sweet milestone and the fabulously ludicrous decade that is the 80s, they’ve teamed up with the guys at White Wall Cinema for a bit of an extravaganza. Things will kick off with a pre-show AV mixtape journey through the fads and styles of the decade, followed by a screening of a hidden-gem 80s classic – no tired old replayings of Ferris Bueller here.
Friday 29th March; doors from 6.50pm; £9.90
Wagner Hall, 2 Regency Road, Brighton, BN1 2RU

Get your hunt on

We have it on good authority (thanks, mum) that Easter egg hunts are perfectly suitable for, er, slightly older people to take part in too. So here are some of our top hunting events and trails on this weekend: First up, the annual Palmeira Square fair and Easter egg hunt (Sunday; 10am – 4pm). This is fast becoming a bit of a local tradition. As well as the egg hunt (entry by £2 prize tombola ticket), there will be stalls from indie businesses and a choir. Or check out Brilliant Brighton‘s, the not-for-profit organisation of over 500 city centre businesses, first-ever digital trail (until Sunday 14th April). All you have to do to take part is scan the QR code in any of the participating businesses’ windows or click on this link. Solve the clues at the different shops to unlock the golden egg and be in with a chance of bagging a £100 gift card! More chocolate prizes await: the Palace Pier is also holding an egg hunt (Sunday; 10am – 4pm; free), Hanningtons Lane has an Easter-themed treasure hunt on (28th March – 14th April; free), with apparently the world’s tallest bubbleologist visiting on Saturday. And, finally, head to Devil’s Dyke for an egg hunt with a view! (Friday – Sunday; 10am – 4pm; £3).
