6 things to do this weekend

Oof, what a week! As chaos unfolds in the UK, with lettuces being praised for their longevity and German news coverage being unusually understandable even to non-German speakers, we’re looking forward to a more stress-free segue into the weekend. Think pumpkin-picking, Halloween movies, plus new films, art and parties. Liz who?

Shock shock, horror horror
Get in the Halloween mood with the last weekend of the annual Horrorfest. There’s still plenty to see this weekend, including the welcome return of The Sorrowful Tale of Sleeping Sidney, which tells the tale of Brighton’s Chocolate Cream Killer through puppetry, and the brilliant Horrorvision Song contest where music meets camp as ghoulish contestants cover dark or devilishly delightful tracks.
Until Sunday 23rd October; various locations and times

Brighton rocks
Remember the shots of Harry Styles looking all broody in uniform snapped on various beaches in Brighton, Saltdean, Worthing and Peacehaven last year? It wasn’t just for the amusement of social media, though, he was filming My Policeman, the movie based on the novel by Brighton-based author Bethan Roberts that was released this week (before it lands on Amazon Prime on 4th November). It’s a gorgeous story of forbidden love that starts in the 1950s, ending in the 1990s, and tracks the interwoven love story of three people amid shifting social conventions. (And it’s well worth making the trip to Worthing for – check out illumination trail Jack on the Green while you’re there.)
Dome Cinema, 21–22 Marine Parade, Worthing, BN11 3PT; from Friday; various times

There’s an art to it
Did you know the i360 had a gallery? Head down there this weekend to catch the last couple of days of The Sussex Contemporary 2022 exhibition, a brilliant celebration of over 100 local artists’ work. There’s everything from still life and botanical art to large-scale landscape paintings, sculpture and textiles, but each piece has been inspired by Sussex food or drink. And it’s all for sale! Plus, a percentage of the funds raised will go to Table Talk Foundation who raise money to support food education for children in Sussex and to support the local hospitality industry.
Until 5pm on Saturday 22nd October; free
Lower Kings Road, Brighton BN1 2LN (entry via the shop entrance at the beach level)

Have a wizard time
Literally. If the rain carries on this weekend, then Brighton’s newest wizard-inspired bar (we write as if the city is bursting with the things) is a great way to magic yourself into a sunnier mood. Or at least into a cosy bar where you can conjure up tasty cocktails armed with a cauldron and some clever tech. Get your wizard robes on and get stuck into some serious potion-making.
Wednesday –  Sunday; 3.30pm – 11pm (subject to change); potion-making experience from £26 for three drinksor walk-ins to the bar are available too
1-2 Clarence Gardens, Brighton BN1 2EG
