seven things to do this weekend | 17th – 19th march

Another week over, another weekend of fun awaits. We’ve got cult theatre, boozy jewellery-making, St Patrick’s Day celebrations and a lot of music. Elsewhere, we’ve got some ideas for how to celebrate your mum this Sunday and some inspo for last-minute gifts (because we know that garage flowers are a no-no). Come on in…

Heathers cast

How very
We saw the musical adaptation of cult film Heathers at Theatre Royal’s press night earlier this week and it was a surprisingly joyful watch. It’s a musical, so yes, it’s several tablespoons of sugar sweeter than the OG film (which, terrifyingly, is over 30 years’ old). And some of its dark themes of toxic popularity, school bullying and teen suicide have been diluted. But it’s still darkly funny, with some real laugh-out-loud moments and an incredibly talented cast nailing comedic moments and catchy tunes alike, so we’d highly recommend this trip to Westerburg High.
Until Saturday 18th March; various times; from £25

The luck of the Irish
The Shakespeare’s Head, our favourite bangers and mash pub in the city, has gone all Irish for St Patrick’s Day this weekend. (As a side note, this is an interesting read for discussing any ‘St Patrick was Welsh, you know,’ comments.) On Friday, you can get stuck into some Irish sausage, colcannon and Guinness gravy; on Saturday, they’re showing the rugby with Ireland facing off against England at 5pm, followed by a traditional Irish music session at 7pm; and on Sunday, there’s live music from the Bedford Celts at 8pm. Line up the Guinness!

Rock out
They built their band on playing live to audiences (they put on a seriously entertaining show when we saw them at Kendal Calling) and now Warrington-based indie-rockers The K’s are coming to Brighton’s Patterns this Saturday. You can get in the mood for a fun night out with the four-piece’s latest feel-good track above, but we reckon they’re best experienced live.
Saturday 18th March; 7pm; £15.40

Meaty magnificence
Looking for a new restaurant to try out? We’d highly recommend lovely new spot Carne in Hove (keep an eye out for our full review next week). Amazing food meets fantastic service and it’s clear to see that this restaurant has quality food and wine at its heart. It makes sense when Great British Charcuterie founder and chef Phil Bartley is behind it and Atelier du Vin created the cocktail list. They’ve still got a few tables available for this weekend so if we were you, we’d nab them while you can!

Eat, drink and make jewellery
What do you get if you cross a jewellery-making workshop with cocktails? No, it’s not a joke, but a brilliant-sounding event being held by local jeweller Beth Chaplin of Rose Honey Design at the Plotting Parlour, aka the home of fabulous cocktails. You’ll take part in a 2.5-hour jewellery masterclass, with Beth showing you how to design and wax-carve your own ring, pendant or earrings, with a tasty cocktail and charcuterie and cheese boards to fuel your creative juices. Your gorgeous piece will then be sent off for casting in eco-silver or gold, ready for you to collect a few weeks later. And if you enter PLOTTINGJEWELLERY at checkout, you’ll get a tasty tenner off the price!
Saturday 18th March; midday – 2.30pm; £135 for one person; £260 for two
