eight things to do to celebrate mother’s day

As Mother’s Day approaches, it’s a great opportunity to show your gratitude to probably one of the most important women in your life. Whether your mum’s a foodie or likes getting stuck into crafts, we’ve rounded up a great selection of things to do with her (or your friends, they’re not just for mums!) in and around Brighton this Mother’s Day weekend (our main weekend guide is here). And if you’re looking for gifting inspo, check out our guide here.

Flower power
Get ready for a blooming brilliant event at One Garden Brighton this weekend! You’ll be getting your hands dirty with expert Plumpton College tutors for a special floristry workshop where you’ll craft your own hand-tied posy. Wild blooms and seasonal trimmings will be at your fingertips so you can let your creativity bloom all while spending some quality time with your mum. But that’s not all – you’ll also be eligible for a student discount while you’re there, giving you 15 percent off at both One Kitchen and One Market.
Saturday 18th March; 10.30am – 2.30pm; £40
Stanmer Park, Lewes Road, Brighton, BN1 9SE

Print party
You’ll learn how to block print the design of your choice onto a tote bag or tea towel at this fun and creative event. Sarah will guide you through the process, and you’ll get to take home a one-of-a-kind personalised gift. Plus, all mums will receive a surprise tasty treat! It’s the perfect opportunity to get creative and make some memories together. Mum plus one tickets have sold out, but there are still family tickets available (mum and two children).
Saturday 18th March; 2.00pm – 4.00pm; from £42
De la Casa, 9 Keymer Road, Hassocks, BN6 8AD

A surprise you say?
Want to treat your mum to delicious burgers and an epic surprise? Sign up to The Burger Shop Co’s email list (see link below) by March 16th, and you’ll receive a special code to use during your Mother’s Day meal at their Arundel restaurant (make a day of it and have a wander around the pretty market town first). Their amazing team has something special planned, but they’re not spilling the beans on what it is. All we can tell you is that it’ll be a fun surprise that you can take all the credit for! It’s a great chance to earn some serious brownie points with your mum.

Foraging fun
Embark on a scenic foraging expedition with your mum. Join expert forager and ex-MasterChef quarter-finalist, Chrisdave, as he takes you to Brighton’s secret wild garlic spots. You’ll learn how to sustainably harvest and prepare this wild delicacy before getting stuck into a foraged light lunch. As you stroll through Stanmer Park, you’ll have the chance to pick other delicious edible forest floor dwellers. The walk ends with a wild garlic-themed demo at the Urban Forage workshop. Expect to leave with a head full of knowledge and a stomach full of foraged snacks and wild garlic goodness. Mums will also be gifted a goody bag to sweeten the deal!

Coffee, cake and caricature
Picture this: you and your mum sipping on your favourite drinks, savouring some delicious cake and freshly baked scones, all while talented artist, ArtyMikey, draws a hilarious caricature portrait of you both. This two-hour-long slot is the perfect combination of classic coffee and cake with a side of silliness and a fun portrait to take home. A great alternative to the more mundane Mother’s Day plans out there!

Tea-mendous
Coming in hot with the tea-related recommendations this Mother’s Day weekend (we are in Britain, after all), there’s another fun one brewing. Tea & Grazing are holding a lively tea tasting this Saturday where tea sommelier Kim Jack-Riley will introduce you to five specialist teas from local and indie brands. It’s set to be the perfect relaxed afternoon with a playlist curated for the occasion by Kim’s partner, broadcaster and radio host Mark Riley (check out his show on 1BTN Radio), and there’s even a mini-meditation. And it’s located in our gorgeous office space in the heart of Kemptown!
Saturday 18th March; 5pm – 7pm; £13
Comarketing, West, 2 – 5 Rock Place, Brighton, BN2 1PF

A roast to remember
How about treating your wonderful mum to a delicious traditional Sunday lunch at The Park View pub this Mother’s Day? We visited recently and are big fans of their succulent roasts with all the trimmings (shout out to the super-tasty gravy) – huge portions served on a rustic wooden platter. We know not everyone’s a roast fan, but there are loads of other tasty dishes on the menu too, including plenty of veggie options. And, should the sun be shining (we live in hope), they’ve got a lovely spacious four-tiered beer garden where you can enjoy some post-prandial chats (or snoozes, it’s a big lunch).
