Brighton goes baa-rmy as sheep hit the streets

It’s been a long time coming – a whole year since the news first dropped – but Martlets Hospice’s latest brilliant art and fundraising project, Shaun by the Sea, is here. We’ve had snowdogs, snowcats and snails, and now it’s the turn of giant Shaun the Sheep.

Martlets have teamed up with Wild in Art (who they worked with on the other projects) and Aardman to deliver a mass-participation sculpture trail that’s great fun for everyone, all whilst raising vital funds to help them carry on caring for and supporting people with terminal illness.

The 42 uniquely designed Shauns are landing on the streets of Brighton and Hove this Saturday 9th September. And for the next eight weeks, you’ll be able to discover heaps of them – large and small – all around Brighton and Hove.

The flock of Shauns – each sponsored by local businesses and organisations – will hang around for people to admire for eight weeks before being auctioned off to raise money for Martlets so the charity can carry on doing their great work.

As well as the large-scale sheep, there are also 77 mini Shauns on display. These have been created by schools, nurseries, community groups and care homes.

Want to scale new heights with Shaun? Then you might like the Shear Drop fundraising event at (or more accurately, off) the i360.

Check out the full list of, ahem, ewenique artists, which include well-known locals such as street artist duo The Postman, Rosie Apps (we love her swimmer-adorned Shaun, Dippers, down at Sea Lanes, pictured above), Boogaloo Stu, Sarah Arnett and Faye Bridgwater, here.

Each Shaun is totally different and we’d highly recommend downloading their free app (Shaun the Sheep by the Sea on Google Play or Apple) to find and collect the sculptures, find out about Shaun-related adventures, and bag some rewards along the way.

And here is the map of where to find them all. You’ve got eight weeks to complete the city-wide trail and see them all. No need to bleat about it if you don’t get around in time as you’ll be able to see all 120 sculptures in one place at the fun-packed farewell weekend on 24th – 26th November.

Got a spare three grand and fancy a Shaun of your own (we know we do)? Then sign up to get bidding at the auction on 27th November. Bloody baa-rilliant.

Saturday 9th September – Sunday 5th November; farewell event and auction, Friday 24th – Monday 27th November; various locations; free but please donate if you can
