six things to do this weekend | 17th – 19th february

Valentine’s Day may be over for another year, but we’re still feeling all the love… for pancakes. Which, let’s face it, we’re infinitely more excited about. Before then though there’s heaps of weekend fun to be had. Let’s get to it…

BRUNSWICK-BEER-BRIGHTON

Over a barrel
Yep, that’s where the Brunswick Winter Beer Festival have got us this weekend with four whole days of drinking delight. There will be over 30 different types of the amber (and other colours) nectar, not to mention food and live music. With nine casks of the best ales from Sussex and beyond as well as plenty of show-stopping craft beers, ciders and other goodies, we’re going to need all four days to try them all.  It all kicks off on Friday, making it the perfect start to the weekend. And, with the forecast looking good – at the time of writing – and temperatures climbing, their spacious beer garden (that feature pic) is looking very tempting right now.
Friday 17th at 5.00pm to Monday 20th February at 11.00pm; free

Sea weed and eat it
Foraging has been a big deal for a while now; there’s something very satisfying about sourcing your own food in the wild. But do you know how to do it safely (we’d rather not get poisoned) and sustainably? Stanmer’s Urban Forage can show you how. On this two-hour workshop and beach stroll on Saturday, you’ll learn how to identify and forage seaweed and other locally growing sea veg and herbs you can pick and eat.
Saturday 18th February; 3pm – 5pm; £35

Take me to (the) task(master)
We can’t imagine we’re alone in our unshakeable confidence that ‘we could do better’ when watching the various celebs on Channel 4’s Taskmaster screw up tasks in spectacularly hilarious fashion. Because obviously we’d be brilliant at all of it (you know, just like how we know all the answers to the University Challenge questions once they’ve been answered). Now’s our – and your – chance to put that confidence to the test as Taskmaster is coming to Hove this Friday. If you want a chance to scoop that coveted Taskmaster Prize, you and your team (of four to six, but you can join up with others on the night) will need to balance, design, create, guess, mime and more to tot up enough points to topple the others. If it’s anything like the TV show, giggles are guaranteed.
Friday, 17th February; 7pm – 10pm; £11.55 per person (£8.30 if you’re a Plaf9rm member)
Platf9rm, Church Road, Hove BN3 2AF

It was love at first woof when we heard the Pup Up Cafe were coming back to Brighton with a special Valentine’s event. This time, they’ve got exclusive use of Steinbeck & Shaw with specific sessions for several popular breeds, including dachshunds, pugs, French bulldogs and poodle mixes. The seafront venue will be transformed into a secure doggie (and dog-lover) heaven with themed props, play areas, photo-ops, unlimited puppuccinos, plus heaps of dog treats and stalls. Woof!
Saturday, 18th February; various sessions from 10am – 5pm; from £10 (kids under eight go free)

Did someone say party?
Yep, one of our favourite pubs, Hove’s The Urchin, is celebrating it’s eighth birthday and is having a three-day party, full of fun, music, shellfish and beer to mark the occasion. Excitingly, they’re also offering a throwback menu featuring some of their favourite 2015 dishes at, wait for it, 2015 prices. Hurrah! And on the Saturday (at 6pm), there will be a pop-up garden BBQ (hello, BBQ scallop and bacon sarnies with Urchin sauce, char siu oyster mushrooms and BBQ oysters) while the seven-piece No Limits band is back to really get the party started. And you won’t go thirsty either with some special in-house-brewed Larrikin beers on tap all weekend. Accept your invite right here!
