Five foodie events to discover this October

You may have noticed we talk about food a fair bit around these parts, so we thought we’d share some of our favourite local foodie events coming up this October (in addition to OctoberBest, of course), so you too can dive into some tasty dishes. Ready, steady, chomp…

1. Discover these much-loved Asian dishes at a monthly supper club

If you’re not already familiar with family-run Kemptown gem Nanima (um, where have you been?), now’s your chance to (re)discover some of their best-loved meals at the October edition of Meanwhile’s Monday supper club. Chef Nicky Allon cooks up a diverse daily-changing menu of authentic dishes from across Asia at what we reckon is, hands down, Brighton’s friendliest restaurant. And, for this supper club, she’ll be cooking up six of her faves – Malaysian king prawn dumplings, Punjabi mixed veg pakoras, Keralan masala cod, their famous Singapore laksa, Afghani pistachio kheer and Sri Lankan roasted semolina. Expect a vibrant flavour-packed feast cooked with skill and love.

2. Get stuck into a plant-based tasting menu

Chef duo Laura and Mattia started their L&M supper club in September 2022 and are still going strong, bringing a whopping nine-course vegan tasting menu to their home of Starfish & Coffee in October. As ever, it’s an intimate affair, with just 20 covers available. The menu’s still being finalised, but you can expect Italian fusion dishes that celebrate seasonal ingredients. Their last vegan offering included salt-baked marinated beetroot tartare and fresh squash tortelli.
Friday 20th October; 7pm – 10pm; £45
Starfish & Coffee, 32 Egremont Place, Brighton, BN2 0GA

3. Get your ghoul on at an 80s Halloween-themed dinner party

Themed evenings don’t always equal top-quality nosh, but there are exceptions and this night from secret dinner party pros Secret Soirée is way too much fun not to include. The ‘Hungry Like the Wolf’ supper club (nice homage to 80s kings Duran Duran there) promises a truly immersive evening of all things eighties with a spooky twist. Food-wise, think retro classics, like beef brisket ‘Ghoul-ash’ and beetroot and lentils bourguignon, aka ‘Beetle Juice’, plus a ‘Lost Boys’ board of charcuterie, bread, feta parcels and mixed dips. But there’s more to these nights than just the food, of course, there are 80s cocktails, a mini quiz, a themed photo booth, and, of course, a costume competition for starters. We’ll be the ones dressed as a packet of hedgehog-flavoured crisps.
Friday 27th October; 7.30pm; from £51.63
Post House, 52 Ship Street, Brighton BN1 1AF

4. Indulge in a feast that looks and tastes good

Boul Kitchen (they of the deliciously sticky chocolate babkas) have teamed up with interiors store Marram Trading for an autumn feast that will be as aesthetically pleasing as it is lip-smackingly tasty. Boul’s three-course veggie Middle Eastern-inspired menu will be served on the heavily laden sharing platters they’re known for and tickets include a welcome cocktail and glass of wine (or non-alcoholic equivalents). In short, it’s worth making the 15-minute journey to Hassocks for! They can cater for dietary requirements, too, just pop the details in a note at checkout.
Thursday, 12th October; 7.30pm; £45
Marram Trading, Unit 1, 36 Keymer Road, Hassocks, BN6 8AJ

5. Try your hand at grape harvesting and get rewarded with a slap-up meal

If you too have romantic visions of roaming the vines, gently snipping off plump grapes before tucking into some wine you could have made earlier (except you didn’t), then you’ll love Tinwood Estate’s harvesting experience. We went along last year and had a blast. It all kicks off with coffee, plenty of excellent cakes and a fun intro from owners Art and Jody who’ll explain how to pick the perfect grapes (no duds in their wine!) and fill you in on just how Tinwood got started. Armed with a bucket, gloves and some scissors, you’ll then join the team to find out more about the harvesting process and get stuck in yourself – for up to two hours. If you’re anything like us, the lure of some delicious sparkling wine on the terrace overlooking the vines (and some over-friendly wasps) meant we were ready to down tools at 30 minutes. Once everyone’s finished, it’s time for a generous three-course harvest buffet, each rustic dish paired with one of the estate’s distinct bubblies.
3rd – 6th October; 9am – 2pm; £65 (they can cater to dietary requirements, just let them know in advance)
