what to do this weekend (and beyond): 22 – 25 June

We know it’s only Thursday, but we’re bringing our weekend guides forward a day so you’ve got more time to get your friends together, your tickets sorted and just have a bloody good one.

All fired up (main image)
What do you get if you mix Filipino barbecue cooking with some tasty beer? One hell of a good time, that’s what. Don’t miss Brighton’s Mestiza (you might have seen Lou Campbell, founder of the spicy Filipino pickle, wowing the punters on BBC Two’s Top of the Shop) and chef Sam Lambert cooking up a fiery storm on the decking at Bison Beer’s Hove bottle shop this weekend. The perfect beer pairing comes courtesy of Aberdeen brewery Fierce Beer who will be taking over the taps. To paraphrase Masterchef, weekends don’t start better than this.
Friday 22 June – Sunday 24 June; from 4pm Fri, 1pm  – 8pm Sat, BBQ roast midday – 5pm Sun
Bison Beer Bar & Bottle Shop, 57 Church Road, Hove

Just dough it
Had a hard week, flour? Just knead to relax? We know, it’s hard when everything feels like it’s going against the grain. *dodges tomato* Alright, alright, we’re done with the bread-related puns, promise (although if you’ve got any great ones, do send them our way). But pummelling some dough is a sure-fired way to release some tension (oh, and yoga’s good, too – see below). At this Community Kitchen course, pastry chef Anna Schwarz will teach you how to make various kinds of bread, from challah to doughnuts as well as other goodies to accompany them. Plus, you get to take your works of art home to eat later. Or on the way home.
Saturday 23rd June; 1.30pm – 5.30pm; £60

Beach time and chill

We already told you about the outdoor pool that’s opening in Brighton next spring, but the new Sea Lanes site on Madeira Drive won’t be sitting empty until then. This Saturday is the very first event there and it’s a good’un: silent disco yoga on the beach. The perfect antidote to a stressful (sun-poor) week, yogis of all levels can take part in this vinyasa flow yoga class. The teacher will guide you (via the headset) through various postures to the sound of an upbeat yoga playlist. Let’s be honest, even though we might not have sun or sand, the views are still infinitely more inspiring than what you typically get in an indoor class. Stick around for the guided meditation session afterwards, too (there’s a special price if you do both). Just make sure you reserve in advance, so there’s a pair of headphones waiting for you. And, relaaax.
Saturday 23rd June, yoga 4.00pm – 5.15pm (arrive from 3.30pm), £15; meditation 5.30pm – 6.15pm, £10; double session £20
Sea Lanes, Brighton (adjacent to Yellowave volleyball), Madeira Drive, Brighton BN2 1EN

weekend
Feast your eyes (and belly)
We’re a big fan of supper clubs and One Supper Club regularly hits it out of the park. This Saturday’s Five-Mile Feast is no exception. The clue’s in the name – they’ve only used producers and suppliers that are within five miles of Brighton and Hove to conjure up a fantastic four-course meal for the night’s event. There are butters from Helen at Knob Butter and vegetables from East Sussex’s best organic farms from The Sussex Pheasant to gin from new (so new it’s not on the shelves yet) Hove micro-distillery Madam Jennifer. But we’re not just talking food, all the crockery, flowers (courtesy of Flower and Fern) and even the artists on the music playlist created by Resident are local, too. What a way to celebrate our city’s community and creativity!
Saturday 23rd June, 7.30pm – 11.00pm; £45

We ain’t afraid of no ghosts
Well, we might be actually. Preston Manor’s a wee bit eerie even during the day and as it’s well known for being incredibly haunted, with lots of ghostly figures and weird phenomena spotted over the years, including in recent times. Some even say it’s the most haunted place in the UK. So, what better location for a ghost hunt, right? *shivers* Apparently, the last time organisers Ghost Hunter Tours were at the Manor, paranormal activity was “through the roof”. So, who’s brave enough?

Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome
To mark the end of Refugee Week with a celebratory flourish, The Hummingbird Project have organised a Refugees Welcome parade, led in true carnival fashion by Afro-Brazilian drumming band Bloco Olofi. Hummingbird have said that almost all of the young unaccompanied refugees they support have felt welcomed in the city – let’s keep it up! The theme of the parade is hummingbirds, flowers and hearts, so there’s plenty of scope to indulge your creative side and join in with some colourful costumers. And, if you fancy making some placards, there’s a free workshop at ONCA Gallery on Saturday. After the parade, you can continue the celebrations at Brighton Dome’s free all-day Together event.
Sunday 24th June; meet at 9.15am, parade sets off at 10.00am
Jubilee Library, Jubilee Street, Brighton BN1 1GE

Music to our ears
If you want to round off your weekend with a bit of an aural treat, then head on over to one of our favourite live music venues, the Hope & Ruin, this Sunday for some standout electronica. Known for his smooth falsetto laid over enticing jazzy beats, Berlin-based songwriter Wayne Snow will be headlining, performing tracks from his acclaimed (by far greater musical authorities than us, but we love it, too) debut LP Freedom TV that trips effortlessly between different musical styles. Haunting support comes from experimental Paris’ duo Kodäma. We’re captivated by the vocals of Japanese-Congolese lead singer Kiala Ogawa; they merge Japanese and English in a deliciously trip-hoppy fashion. It’s a beautiful way to ease into the new week.
Sunday 24th June, 8.30pm; £8.63
The Hope & Ruin, 11 – 12 Queen’s Road, Brighton BN1 3WA

Light at the end of the tunnel
Ok, we know this is on a Monday, but these tours don’t take place that often, so we’re putting it out there in case you can play hooky for a couple of hours (if anyone asks, we didn’t say that). If you’ve ever wanted to see beyond the Regency splendour and on to the bits of the Royal Pavilion that aren’t generally open to the public, now’s your chance. You’ll learn all about life below stairs and get behind-the-scenes access to the basement and famous tunnel that George IV had built so that he could go to his riding school and stables (now Brighton Dome) without being seen. Cheeky.
Monday 25th June, 10.30am; £13
Tickets available in person or by calling 03000 290902 (Mon – Fri)
Royal Pavilion, 4/5 Pavilion Buildings, Brighton BN1 1EE
