5 things to do this weekend: 11th – 13th November

Welcome to your weekend! We don’t know about you, but it’s been a bit of a struggle this week – thanks for your help, weather – so we are READY for two and a half days (can’t discount that half) of non-work-related antics. From the start of epic film festival Cinecity and more great film action, there’s loads going on. Come join us…

Pub be good to me
Drinking establishments are spoiling us this weekend: it’s not just the epic Tap Takeover that is kicking off (read all about that here), the On The Rocks Bar Crawl is also taking place. These are held regularly from The Fitz Regent (forever the Pav Tav to us) and whether you’re a long-term resident or new to the city, they’re a great way to meet more people as you make your way around at least five bars and clubs in the city. We should also mention that you’ll get a free shot at every bar, way cheaper drinks with your ticket (a pint for £2.50? Yeah, baby), free club entry and a guide on hand to help introduce you to people. PS: Rocking up solo is absolutely ok.
Friday 11th and Saturday 12th November; 7.30pm: £11
The Fitz Regent, 7–8 Castle Square, Brighton BN1 1FX

You’ll be the death of me
We tend to shy away from all things death-related in this country even though it’s a key part of being human. Not so at the Death Festival. Set up by Women of the World Festival founder Jude Kelly, this very first edition of the festival prompts us to think about what happens at the other end of our lives through talks, performances and installations. It’s not all gloom and doom, though, the tone is both respectful and irreverent and sheds light on the subject through different people’s perspectives – from philosophers to scientists and theologians. Our highlights include Brighton author Anna Burtt in conversation with Amber Jeffrey, founder of The Grief Gang podcast; a game of death euphemism bingo with artist duo Yara + Davina, a performance of letters to the beloved dead by those mourning them and a portrait photography installation by Rankin.
Friday 11th November 7pm – Saturday 12th November at 11pm; from £10

Magical mystery tour
Sometimes reality gets a bit too much and we feel the need to escape from the non-stop chatter of our brain. But until we actually have an off switch for that (patent pending), transportative installations seem like an excellent alternative. Welcome to artist Jim Sanders’ studio, aka the Spirit House. You’ll enter this immersive world through veils – symbolising the boundary between our conscious and subconscious worlds – where you’ll experience ‘a journey for the senses’ via art, live performance, sound, film and scent. Oh, and some tea and boozy beverages. Get ready for some magic.
Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th November; various times; £8.50
Gallery Sans, 12 Bear Road, Brighton BN2 4DA

Pyjamas, please
Purveyors of our favourite dungarees, Lucy & Yak, have branched out into (equally gorgeous) sleepwear. They’re celebrating the launch with Sleepy Sounds – wonderfully soothing nights of live acoustic music that’s designed to calm and comfort. The Saturday night sold out almost immediately, but you can still grab tickets to the Sunday evening event at the Brighton store (which will be decked out in fairy lights with blankets to snuggle up in). Plus the £5 ticket price nabs you a voucher of the same amount to spend on the night. We reckon it’s the perfect way to ease yourself into a new week. PJs on!
Sunday 13th November; 7pm – 9pm; £5

All the fun of the (Christmas fair)
Whether we like it or not, it’s all getting a bit festive up in here. This weekend sees one of the first Christmas fairs land in the city and it’s a good ‘un. The Craft & Flea returns to Europe’s tallest parish church for a special Xmas edition. There’s always a good selection of carefully chosen stallholders selling everything from illustrations to candles and plants. Top tip: pre-book your tickets to avoid queuing. Artisan craft fair regular Beau Natural also has a (free-to-enter) fair on this Saturday featuring over 40 indie makers – head to Brighton Unitarian Church (New Road, BN1 1UF) between 11am and 5pm. Want more Christmas markets? Check out this list of our faves.
Saturday 12th November; 11am – 5pm: £2.50
St Bartholomew’s Church, Ann Street, Brighton BN1 4GP
