BOTI Reviews | Now That’s What I Call Magic

The University of Sussex is the official higher education partner of the Brighton Festival. And for the second year, has created a programme within the event called The Festival of Ideas.

We went to see Now That’s What I Call Magic, a discussion with Turner Prize-winning artist and University of Sussex alumnus Jeremy Deller.

Jeremy spoke about his work through the lens of collaboration, protests, politics and rave culture, all of which have influenced him.

He discussed his inflatable Stonehenge installation, Sacrilege, and his Turner Prize-winning re-enactment The Battle of Orgreave, which recreated the 1984 clash between striking miners and police.

He also discussed his 2018 documentary on the early UK rave scene, Everybody In The Place. Perhaps one of the last greatest subculture movements in this country – and one that still impacts culture today.

We then went on to watch the documentary in the stunning Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts (ACCA). What a vibe.

While Jeremy has left the building, there is still time to catch another show at ACCA as part of The Festival of Ideas. Materia is a duet between performer Andrea Salustri and the material polystyrene, crossing contemporary circus, choreography and physical theatre.

Materia is on until Saturday 25th May 2024; various times; from £12.50
