BOTI Reviews | Spritualized

The Brighton Festival is in full swing and space rockers Spritualized, who are a part of its curated line-up, played to a full house in the Brighton Dome on Saturday night.

The auditorium was seated which made it more of a cinematic experience, perhaps allowing us to more fully commit to the music. And commit we did. From the moment the band walked on stage (there was no hello or crowd chat) they exploded into a sound that could only be theirs.

Spritualized, led by space man Jason Pierce, created a two-hour celestial soundscape that sounded way bigger than the six musicians on stage. A mix of garage rock, neo psychedelia, indie, blues and gospel, peppered with euphoric rushes and breathtaking interludes.

They didn’t play much from past albums and that didn’t matter. These were songs that had been composed post lockdown with a fresh energy and feeling of nowness.

For true fans and new fans, Spritualized were a brilliant addition to the Brighton Festival that has been curated by Guest Director Frank Cottrell-Boyce with the theme of Hope, Wonder, Magic and Fun. And there’s more incredible music to come with rave legend James Lavelle’s Unkle performing at the Brighton Dome on Friday, so catch him while you can.

Unkle performs on Friday 24th May; from £30
