Spotted that vibrant building towards the bottom of Brighton’s North Road with the fabulous new design? Well, that’s the exciting new bar, kitchen and hideout that microbrewery Bison Beer have brewed up in collaboration with Humble Plates and it’s officially open for business.
This is Bison Beer boys Jack Cregan and Nick Vardy’s third site in the city, following on from their original bottleshop on East Street in 2015 and their second in Hove last year and it promises to be a good one. The three-storey building comprises a cosy basement hideout (with a big screen), a ground floor bar area and a light-filled upstairs eating area where you can also book tables.
Humble Plates’ extraordinarily successful pop-ups at the Hove site led to the two businesses putting their heads together. They came up with the 103 North Road project to bring a new grazing option to the rapidly developing area after Bison’s planned pub – The Bison Arms – failed to come off last year. Several businesses have tried – unsuccessfully – to make a go of the North Road site (the last being vegetarian restaurant 1847), but we reckon the Bison-Humble collaboration’s got staying power.
Head chef Dan Cotton will be serving up an exciting combination of snacks, small plates and sharing options (think tender pork belly with red miso and chilli, paneer with miso and incredibly moreish cauliflower croquettes, as well as vegan cheese and onion and Brazilian feijoada versions – yum), many of which will be sourced from local suppliers. And the team are planning beer, wine and food pairings, too. We got a taster of what to expect and we can tell you that it’s all very very good.
They’re currently working from a reduced soft launch menu with the official one coming this Thursday at their launch party, which kicks off at 5.00pm. You probably don’t need an excuse to check the new site out, but here’s a great incentive anyway, the first 100 beers are on the house!
