The Coal Shed to move to larger venue in spring 2024, new concept planned for old site

Popular Brighton steak restaurant The Coal Shed is moving to a new, larger venue in North Street in spring 2024, almost tripling its capacity.

The Boyce’s Street site accommodates 54 diners but the new venue will seat 142 people.

As The Coal Shed name suggests, they’ll continue to champion the type of food they’re best known for – heritage meat and South coast seafood cooked over coal – but new dishes will also be added to the menu after the move, too.

The new eatery looks set to be a suitably grand affair with an expansive main dining room with a huge glass roof lantern, three private dining areas that cater for up to 60 people, and an ageing room (for the meats, it’s not some terrible TikTok filter).

“The move is all about offering customers the full dining experience that I have always dreamed of, with the new site allowing for a bar area, a more intimate experience with your host, and more seating,” said Black Rock Restaurant Group founder Razak Helalat.

Speaking of that bar area, it will feature banquette seating with round bar tables, as well as a crescent-shaped bar lined with bar stools (a little like the one at Tutto, we reckon).

The Boyce’s Street site won’t be sold off though, the group are working on a new as-yet-undisclosed concept – so we’ll keep you posted about what’s happening there!

It’s been a busy few years for Helalat and his group – the brilliant Tutto and Burnt Orange opened in 2022 and 2021, respectively, joining the well-established The Coal Shed (2011) and The Salt Room (2015), so we’re keen to see what Raz does next!

The new site will be at Clarence House, 30 – 31 North Street, Brighton BN1 1EB
