boti’s tuesday pick of the day: theatre

We know what it’s like in May, there’s just so much good stuff to choose from that as you flick through the brochures or scroll down your screen, you’re quickly struck with overwhelm. To the point where you never get round to booking anything at all and it’s easier to just go for a pint at the local. Anything to avoid working out which one of the ka-trillion (*this figure may not be 100% accurate) events on offer – that didn’t already sell out weeks ago – you should go and see today.

But no! There’s another way! Every day this month we’ll be giving you one show we reckon you should get tickets for, so you can eliminate the brain ache and just get out and enjoy some great performances. We’ll be mixing it up, so our choices will include everything from music to circus, so over the course of the week you can sample a veritable smörgåsbord of culture. You’re welcome.

Here’s what we’ve got for you today:

Heroes by Exploding Whales

David Bowie’s music is definitely up there with the greats, in our opinion, as there’s always a time and a place for his music. Any track you put on is guaranteed to fill you with nostalgia and transport you back in time. That’s why we’re into this new play by Bebe and Tony Barry – Heroes.

We probably all remember the days when our unbreakable teenage love for a music icon was overpowering, right? If that sounds familiar, then this coming-of-age story is likely to give you a warm heart. After seeing David Bowie perform ‘Starman’ for the first time on Top of the Pops, teens Joe and Billie’s lives changes forever. (We know that feeling well, Take That circa 1992.)

On a mission to get to Bowie’s next London gig, the best friends embark on a rollercoaster adventure of self-discovery, blurring the lines between hero worship and friendship. Set in the summer of 1972 to the soundtrack of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars, that’s enough for us!
