visit a different kind of department store

When we think of department stores these days (at least those outside London), our minds tend to conjure up images of staid old buildings filled with items that have been languishing, unloved, on shelves for decades. Well, happily, The Stanley Road Department Store couldn’t be any more different to this.

You might know The Stanley Road Store from their flea markets or their pop-up fairs during the Open Houses when they bring together some of Brighton’s best designer-makers under one roof.

This time around, they’ve got a whopping 52 independent local designer-makers on board and the store is hanging around for a whole three months. Housed in a two storey-building of what used, appropriately, to be part of Brighton’s much-loved Hanningtons department store, you’ll find an eclectic mix of creations.

Think everything from bright(on) and beautiful tufted mats, screen-printed tees and sweats, prints and cards galore, vintage and upcycled clothing, statement ceramic and silver jewellery, butter-soft leather goods, natural zero-nasties soap, small-batch ceramics, concrete and illustrated homeware, artisan chocolate, quirky lighting, and SO much more. There really is something for pretty much everyone, and all pockets and tastes. Basically, it’s all of our gift (to ourselves) shopping in one place.

And it’s more than a shop, too – they’ll also be holding workshops, supper clubs, tasting events and heaps more, so watch this space!

And if you’re struggling to find it, have a look at this helpful reel!

Initially, they were only going to be hanging around until December 2022, but they got permission to stay longer and so, happily, they’ll be here for the foreseeable!
