the fringe shows we’re looking forward to

Brighton Fringe is back with a bang this year, bringing over 500 brilliantly creative and affordable events to heaps of great venues across the city. And they’re all on sale now. As always, there’s something for all tastes, from cabaret and award-winning comedy to queer musicals, theatre, circus, dance and rib-tickling kids shows.

Venue-wise, there are some newbies in the mix this year – outdoor site Caravanserai has been welcomed into the Fringe fold. Established at Camp Bestival in 2023, the immersive pop-up site will be fashioned from repurposed caravans and vintage fairground waltzers, with hoopla stalls and shoot-out galleries becoming bars.

Kemptown queer hotspot Arcobaleno is also new for 2023, joining popular veteran venues, such as The Rotunda Theatre and The Caxton Arms and BOTI’s personal favourite, the Spiegeltent.

Here are some highlights we can look forward to:

Mythos: Ragnarok
This dark comedy combines the unusual bedfellows of Norse mythological storytelling and full-contact pro wrestling. The result is intense and thrilling fight scenes, the like of which you wouldn’t normally see in a theatre. And it’s not just for the wrestling fans, either. The show was deemed a ‘must-see’ at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and sold out its run completely.

Experiment Human
The protagonist in this horror-comedy is a non-human creature who’s completely obsessed with Benedict Cumberbatch. So far, so surreal. As well as protecting the Cumberbatch at all costs, the show examines human happiness and what it means to be human. We’re intrigued.

If You Can’t Say Anything Nice
Chloe’s show is set to be one of the comedy highlights of this year’s Fringe. Following sell out Edinburgh and Soho Theatre runs last year, she’s back with this new work-in-progress at The Temple Bar.

Why I Love White People
The comedy programme also features several up-and-coming comedians, such as BBC New Comedy Awards finalist Mamoun Elagab, whose work-in-progress show takes an unorthodox look at British society.

Chicken Circus
One of the many family-friendly and kids’ events at this year’s Fringe, Head2Head Sensory Theatre’s show is an inclusive, immersive experience aimed at children with various disabilities. Adapted from a story by Monty Pythoner Terry Jones, the show tells the tale of a fox who trains as a circus performer after stealing chickens.

Comedy Club 4 Kidz
This long-standing family-friendly showcase – it’s been running since 2005 – gives guaranteed giggles. You’ll see some big comedy names performing a range of stand-up and sketches, just minus the rude bits.

With a menu of shows as diverse as its residents, Brighton Fringe, we love you.
