champagne – it’s our bread and butter

Champagne and caviar? Champagne and oysters? Apparently, we’ve been getting it wrong all these years and, actually, bread and butter is champagne’s ideal bedfellow. Who knew? Well, the Charles Heidsieck champagne house and Douglas McMaster of zero-waste Brighton restaurant Silo, for starters, because they’re showcasing the delicious pairing at a one-off event on 16th May.

Kicking off the second season of the champagne house’s ‘Maverick Encounters’, which celebrate innovative entrepreneurs such as McMaster, guests will be welcomed with a glass of Charles Heidsieck bubbles and the chance to quiz the eco-chef before taking part in a hands-on butter-blending workshop and a champagne and bread and butter pairing masterclass. Phew! You’ll be rewarded for your hard work with a bespoke waste-free tasting menu (we’re afraid there are no veggie or vegan alternatives, though), with each of the four courses carefully matched with its champagne soulmate. Did we mention there’s champagne (and lots of it)?

Ok, it’s a bit spendy (the tickets are £75), but with locally sourced food and champagne this good, plus your own seasoned butters and a loaf of Silo’s sourdough bread to take home, we can’t wait. Get in quickly, though, as there are only 25 tickets available.
