boti’s wednesday pick of the day: interactive performance

We know what it’s like in May, there’s just so much good stuff to choose from that as you flick through the brochures or scroll down your screen, you’re quickly struck with overwhelm. To the point where you never get round to booking anything at all and it’s easier to just go for a pint at the local. Anything to avoid working out which one of the ka-trillion (*this figure may not be 100% accurate) events on offer – that didn’t already sell out weeks ago – you should go and see today.

But no! There’s another way! Every day this month we’ll be giving you one show we reckon you should get tickets for, so you can eliminate the brain ache and just get out and enjoy some great performances. We’ll be mixing it up, so our choices will include everything from music to circus, so over the course of the week you can sample a veritable smörgåsbord of culture. You’re welcome.

Here’s what we’ve got for you today:

Gob Squad’s Creation (Pictures for Dorian)

Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all? If you fancy witnessing people bring magic and performance to the predictability of everyday life (who doesn’t?), then the Gob Squad’s latest production, Creation (Pictures for Dorian) is one to catch this week.

Inspired by Oscar Wilde’s iconic character Dorian Gray, who remains eternally youthful at a cost to his soul, Gob Squad takes a look behind the vanity mirror questioning beauty, morality and power. The collective has been together for over twenty years, sharing a passion to ‘place the beautiful in the mundane’ and drive us to think about the little bit of Dorian in all of us. We like the sound of this!

If you haven’t had a chance to head up to the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts to experience the space, then this playful production that looks at the making of contemporary identity – with added humour thrown into the mix to keep you thinking and entertained, of course – is a reason to go. Interactive theatre is one of our favourites, so jump in and immerse yourself in the spectacle of the show, as you might even find yourself becoming part of it!
