Sea Lanes pool now open to public

It’s a been a long (long) time coming, but the much-awaited 50-metre outdoor pool is now finally open to everyone.

After a launch event on Thursday 1st June, the pool opened to non-members on Friday 2nd June. Several of the beachside retail units have been open a couple of weeks now and the six-lane pool opened to those who signed up for membership *waves* on Monday 29th May. We can report that it’s been worth the wait. It’s heated without being too hot – 19C – and it’s glorious being able to swim in an outdoor pool in the city. (NB Bring a padlock for the lockers, otherwise you’ll need to fork out £6 for one.)

And for those who prefer to stick to the sea, there will be free-to-use cold beachside showers and lockers. We also understand that the endless pool is making a comeback and a ramp down to the sea is on its way, too, making the journey across the pebbles easier for everyone. On that note, we should say that the steps out of the pool are cut straight into the poolsides so may be harder for some people to use.

With all the units now open, this is going to be THE summer hangout – and probably our second office. Yoga at Luna Wave, followed by a cooling swim, more filthy egg sarnies at Fika and all the beers at the Bison terrace. Bring it on!

Other local indie businesses joining the gang are Humble Plates’ BBQ concept Wood X Coal, Photomatic (love this!), Paddle People, meeting space venue Here Spaces and swim holiday firm Swim Trek.

Over 1,000 people signed up for founder membership early on, but with numbers now exceeding 1,500, South Downs Leisure – the contractor in charge – has temporarily paused membership to ensure the pool doesn’t get too busy. Slightly randomly, membership includes the use of Southwick Leisure Centre and Wadurs pool in Shoreham. Plus, anyone will be able to swim on a pay-as-you-go basis of £11 a swim.

The project’s been in the making for eight years, but after multiple delays, which saw next spring become next autumn, construction finally began last June. It’s been well worth the wait!
