brighton’s open-air beachside pool to open in 2020

Happy news! Brighton IS getting its outdoor beachside swimming pool! Yes, after a fair few ups and downs over the past year, the Sea Lanes team’s revised plans (the first design was rejected in December) for the Madeira Drive site development have finally been approved by Brighton & Hove City Council, which means the much-needed pool is a go to open in spring 2020.

On Wednesday 3rd April, the council granted temporary planning permission to begin the transformation of the derelict Peter Pan site on Madeira Drive. This means construction should be able to start later this year and that the popular summer pop-up of 2018 will return with yoga events, talks, and more. We can’t wait!

The beautiful new development (think elegant buildings in muted earthy tones with green roofs to support biodiversity) close to Yellowave will house an open-air heated (heated!) 25m pool, which will be accessible to everyone, from those looking to gain sea-swimming confidence to people working on their fitness and those training for events. But the team’s long-term plan remains unchanged: to deliver a 50m swimming pool that becomes recognised as the national open-water swimming centre.

In addition to the pool, there will be 39 small business units that are suitable for retail, health and fitness and office space – swimming holiday company SwimTrek has already secured a space – as well as a food court with street food kiosks and an outdoor seating area. On that note, the boys at Bison Beer have just announced they’ll be opening their fourth venue on the site – more news on that as we get it!

Ahead of the summer pop-up, you can still enjoy the wonderful Beach Box sauna and spa, as well as one-to-one swim-training sessions in the endless pool and guided sea swims. We’d highly recommend all of the above!
