Capsule Records’ Ones to Watch at The Great Escape

Introducing our new monthly music column from Hove record and coffee shop, Capsule Records. This month, it’s all about The Great Escape. Over to Capsule!

With the new music festival kicking off today, we’ve been finalising our plans of who we’re going to see. We’ve curated a list of acts you may not have considered before, but who are definitely worth seeing. Hopefully, there’s something for everyone.

Nokia Mansion

Stand-out song: ‘Nokia Low

Based in Brighton, Nokia Mansion are leading the resurgence of this city’s hip-hop scene. With their debut single, ‘Nokia Low’, it became clear that they were carving out their own path. In a world of labels and management, Nokia Mansion demonstrate that they know their audience best. With their DIY ethos still intact today, it’s refreshing to see they’re doing it for themselves and the sheer joy of making music with their mates.

Catch Nokia Mansion: At 12.30am on Thursday at the Waterbear Venue

Marysia Osu

Stand-out song: ‘Melting Timbers

Marysia Osu is a classically trained harpist. Whilst this feels like a rarity in itself, what sets Osu apart is her ability to push the instrument beyond its perceived capabilities. The harmony between the harp and electronics creates something otherworldly. Osu’s music is serene yet complex; it is timeless yet of its time. It’s these seemingly contradictory statements that suggest if you’re looking for something out of the ordinary, this is it.

Catch Marysia Osu: At 8.55pm on Saturday at Komedia Studio

Enny

Enny

Stand-out song: ‘Take It Slow’ ft. Loyle Carner

Enny first rose to prominence with her 2020 single, ‘Peng Black Girls’. With Jorja Smith featuring on the remix, she attracted new audiences who quickly latched on to the smooth beats counterpointed with hard-hitting and meaningful lyrics. From here, Enny has continued to demonstrate her prowess as a wordsmith by breaking and reshaping moulds writing on a variety of important topics, from sociopolitical issues to self-care. The recent release of her latest six-track EP, ‘We Go Again’ is a testament to how brilliantly she is continuously growing as an artist.

Catch Enny: At 10pm Thursday at Patterns Upstairs

Bingo fury

Bingo Fury

Stand-out song: ‘Big Rain

Influenced by the likes of Nina Simone, Leonard Cohen and the Lounge Lizards, Bingo Fury pleasingly combines the romantic with the haunting. His songs have a lilting and comforting quality that brings to mind old jazz standards, whilst his arrangements and rhythms are often experimental. Bingo Fury, with his off-kilter patterns and angular sounds, will be performing at One Church, which seems a perfectly fitting crossover between the traditional and the new.

Catch Bingo Fury: At 8.15pm Thursday at One Church and at 6.25pm Friday at The Gladstone (the latter is part of the Alt Escape, so free entry)

The scorpios

The Scorpios

Stand-out song: ‘Mashena: We Went

Hailing from Sudan, The Scorpios are a psychedelic band influenced by soul and afro-beat. They pride themselves in majestically combining Arabic rhythms with a fervency present in Eastern funk to create an underlying groove for the enthralling voice of lead singer Regia Ishag. Their most recent album, Let’s Go, pushed their even sound further by incorporating aspects of dub and introducing Japanese keyboard player, Izumi Kobayashi to the band. Let’s Go perfectly exemplifies the concoction of vast cultural influences that makes this band so intriguing.

Catch The Scorpios: At 3.30pm Saturday at Brighthelm

The Great Escape runs from Wednesday 10th to Saturday 13th May.

If you didn’t manage to get your hands on tickets this time, then it’s still worth downloading The Great Escape app to see what’s on at the free festival-adjacent Alternative Escape.
