women-led businesses in brighton we love

International Women’s Day, on 8th March, is a day that ignites inspiration across the globe through the achievements of brilliant women. We’ve come a long way since the first IWD back in 1911, but the journey to a gender-equal, stereotype-free world is far from over, hence this year’s #EmbraceEquity theme. In honour of IWD, we wanted to celebrate the fabulous women running businesses in and around Brighton. We’ll be featuring some of our favourites this month.

Wildling Water Kefir | Roisin Meredith
Founder and head brewess Roisin really began to appreciate the benefits of fermented drinks after she found they helped her baby who became ill after taking antibiotics. This led her into the wonderful world of the microbiome and she discovered natural ways to support health through fermented foods and drinks. She tinkered with these tummy-taming tonics until she refined the recipe to create Wildling, her tasty vegan, low-sugar, low-alcohol drink made from kefir, an alternative to kombucha. Wildling was awarded a Great Taste Award last year, so she was clearly onto something! The refreshing, naturally sparkling drinks make a great Prosecco or tonic alternative and are available in four great flavours: lime and mint, rhubarb and ginger, elderflower, and new kid on the block, activated charcoal.
From £18 for six bottles; buy at HISBE, Kindly, Health Rebels and online.

Twit Twoo Bakery | Ione Edwards Bayne
Ione started Twit Twoo when she was in her early 20s and “feeling ambitious”. But she acknowledges that she was far too inexperienced to be running a business at that time, so fell into various other roles. But after a very messy divorce and falling into single motherhood, she decided to restart the business at the age of 30, turning it into the thriving business it is today. It’s no surprise she’s in high demand as her show-stopping birthday and wedding cakes taste just as good as they look. She also runs a nationwide postal brownie service (because how can you not love cake by post) and makes cakes for the Wrap co-working space and another one of our BOTI faves, Oeuf Cafe. She’s currently got some insane brownie slabs for Mother’s Day and Easter up on her site, too!

Faace | Jasmine Wicks-Stephens
Jasmine founded Brighton-based beauty communications agency KNOWN, and is also the brains behind natural skincare range Faace, which has had rave reviews from national publications from Forbes to Stylist (and us). Her inspiration to create the brand’s streamlined products came from the no-nonsense way she and her peers talk about their lives and the products they like, as well as her taking stock of her own skincare habits and the routine she would realistically do every day. We’re big fans of the mask and cleansing products’ sexy branding and how simple they are to use. Plus, let’s be honest, we’re all tired, sweaty and period Faaces at one time or another and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that! As Jasmine herself says: “Providing a product that can be a little bit of a ‘F-U, I am on my period’ feels strong and empowering. I don’t think having a period should be something to feel ashamed of and having something on your shelf called ‘period’ kind of helps to normalise them even more, hopefully.” Read our full interview here.
