We understand there’s a reason to this new May bank holiday we’ve been given, so if you’d like to watch Charlie getting his crown in all its pomp and circumstance glory, here’s where you can get your royal on. Or just get royally happy about the extra day off (if you’re after a Coronation-free guide on things to do this weekend, we’ve got you). The main large-scale live viewing spot on Saturday 6th May is going to be the big screen on Jubilee Square with Jubilee Street closed to traffic to allow the crowd to spread. There’ll be a covered area to watch from in case of the inevitable English drizzle, as well as food and drinks stalls and picnicking areas. The screen will remain in situ for Sunday’s Children’s Parade, the Eurovision the week after and The Great Escape (now you’re talking) the week after that. St Mary’s in Kemptown is also screening the Coronation on Saturday 6th May from 10am – 4pm. It’s free entry and tea and cake will be on offer to sweeten the deal. Purple reign In honour of the new king, several key Brighton landmarks will go extra regal for the occasion – they’ll be lit up in purple. Look out for the colour change at The Royal Pavilion, Brighton Pier, the Brighton Centre, Brighton and Hove Town Halls and the Mazda Fountain on Grand Parade. There are street parties galore happening all over the city (over 30, according to the council), but if your area’s not putting something on, you can always head over to the free-to-enter Right Royal Rave Up (at 2pm on Saturday) at Brighton Fringe’s newest venue, Caravanserai. With sock puppet workshops, a Coronation ceilidh, and cucumber sarnies galore courtesy of Ladies that Lunch, and a Caravanserai king crowning, this sounds fun whatever your views on the royal family.
