BOTI Reviews | Rules Schmules: How to be Jew-ISH

BRIGHTON FRINGE

Rules Schmules: How to be Jew-ISH is a sassy, heartfelt musical journey about the ups and downs of cultural identity in today’s modern society. It’s fun, it’s educational and it’s brilliantly authentic.

Suzie Depreli’s one-woman show takes a deep dive into all things Jewish, but with an emphasis on the ‘ish’.  Because when some Jewish is too much and some is never enough, isn’t it better to just be Jew-ISH in your own way?

She covers traditional Orthodox expectations on career paths, dress sizes and arranged marriages. She sings about her experiences growing up with different religious holidays to her primary school friends, and the riotous Yiddish slanders her elder relatives would dish out to unsuspecting non-speaking Jews and each other.

Each song is composed, arranged and written by classically trained Suzie, and covers a uniquely Jewish tradition. Or rule. But rules are made to be challenged and while Suzie clearly loves her Orthodox roots, she also loves Christmas trees and pork sausages.

This is a show filled with funny anecdotes, original music and smart lyrics. Poignant in parts too. And you don’t have to be Jewish, English, Scottish, Finnish or any other-ish to love every minute of it.
