FemFest, the brilliant Brighton-based, queer, feminist arts festival kicks off its fourth edition on Monday, 6th March, just in time for International Women’s Day. Artistic director and award-winning feminist theatre maker Maddie Ross set up the seven-day fringe festival to offer women, non-binary and trans people a safe space to perform and engage with work. This year they’re back at their new home – The Actors – with another fantastic line-up, featuring a variety of shows from life drawing and theatre to poetry, musical comedy and drag. We’ll be honest, all of the 18 events at this year’s festival sound brilliant, but we’re particularly looking forward to Amiot Hills’ production of Antichrist, “a high-camp, body-horror romp into pregnancy”; musical comedian Selena Mersey’s Madonna/Whore show (we saw her perform at the Fringe launch show and would highly recommend you go and see her) and the needle-felting merkin-making (oh yeah) workshop with Aghh! Zine and Devil’s Dyke Network. Not only is FemFest a great chance to see some of the brilliant work being produced by local female, trans and non-binary artists, it’s also a fantastic way to support both them and the festival charity Survivors’ Network. A proportion of ticket sales will go towards the Brighton-based charity’s work in supporting people who have experienced sexual violence and abuse. And if you’d love to go and see something but simply can’t afford it, they even offer no-questions-asked concessions tickets, hoping to lead the way for other arts institutions to make culture more accessible in the city.
