things to do this weekend

It’s starting to look a bit festive out there, isn’t it? So we’ve got our BOTI selves together and brought back our weekend guide to prove that just because the nights are drawing in doesn’t mean the fun is drying up.

Bison Brrrr
We don’t know about you, but at least half the fun of skiing for us is the Après parties and, from this weekend, you don’t even need to head to the slopes to make the most of them. Yep, Brighton’s own Bison Beer are launching WinterFest at their beach bar this Saturday and are promising a two-day schnapps-filled celebration complete with beers (obvs), beats (courtesy of Isle of Wight regular DJs Ronnie Joice and Ethan Owen) and, um, boogieing. As well as mulled booze, wintry cocktails, toasty firepits and tasty winter comfort food on Sunday. And, if you really want to get in the mood – and bag some tasty discounts off your drinks while you’re at it – get your best ski gear on. Goggles and all.

Make it happen
Oh, how we love the Maker’s Fair. This Saturday, forty fabulous local artists, creatives and designers will be showcasing their wares at St George’s in Kemptown. From affordable original art and ceramics to joyous jewellery (BOTI fave Emma Stanton will be there), there’s something for all tastes and pockets.
Saturday 13th November; 11.00am – 5.00pm; free
St George’s Church, St George’s Road, Brighton, BN2 1ED

Fayre’s fair
While we’re on the subject of fairs, the brilliantly named Patcham Duck Fayre (which, confusingly, has little to do with ducks) is hosting a Christmas tabletop fair edition this Sunday. We’re still not sure how it’s actually November let alone – count ’em – SIX WEEKS til bloody Christmas, but this community fair sounds like a lovely way to spend the day. With Xmas-themed craft stalls from local makers and festive treats, plus the ever-essential tombola, it sounds like everything Christmas should be.
Sunday 14th November; 11.30am – 3.00pm; free

It’s never too skate
We had to include this one if only for the gorgeous photo by Jamie Marshall. If you haven’t been yet, then make sure you go after dark when the coloured lights give the Pavilion a really magical feel. After all, is it really winter without an outdoor ice rink (although we’re not sure we’re ready for winter yet tbh)? Open until 9th January 2022, you’ve got plenty of time to get your skates on!

Free as a bird
It’s that time of year again when the starlings showcase their aerial acrobatics, with thousands of them creating mesmerising swirling clouds in unison in the sky. The patterns aren’t always safe for work, though. There are heaps of gorgeous photos of the murmurations out there, but if you want to experience the beauty in real life in Brighton, your best bet is to head to one of the piers (where they roost for the night) around half an hour before dusk. If you fancy waiting for a dry evening though, you’ve got time, it’s a long-running show – they usually keep doing it until March.
