Michelin-starred chef Rafael Cagali is bringing a new restaurant to Hove – and it’s not your usual seaside fare. Yep, the chef behind two-Michelin-starred Da Terra and relaxed Bethnal Green eatery Elis is opening Marea in Hove this September.
The name means ‘tide’ in Italian, but don’t expect anything too predictable to roll in. Marea’s menu will flow with the seasons and local East Sussex ingredients, landing somewhere between fancy and friendly – think fine-dining chops without the stiff collars.
Ewan Waller, Rafael’s protégé, will run the kitchen day to day, dishing up small plates, sharers, mains and desserts that keep things exciting. Meanwhile, front of house boss Charlie Lee (also Rafael’s partner) is all about making sure you feel welcome, not overwhelmed.
Marea is “about bringing the highest-quality ingredients and innovative techniques to a setting that feels welcoming and accessible,” Cagali said.
With space for 38 guests and a long bar where you can watch the magic happen, the restaurant promises a cosy but lively spot where you can kick back and try something a little special.
If you’re after somewhere that serves up serious flavour but without the fuss, we reckon this one’s worth marking in your calendar.
Rafael’s pretty clear on what he wants: a place that brings excellent food and a relaxed atmosphere, where locals feel at home but can still try something new. Sounds like a perfect fit for Hove.
First look
Last week, we got a little preview and it’s safe to say that, from what we’ve seen so far, Marea’s nailed its aim of bringing top-notch ingredients and innovative cooking to an intimate and welcoming space.
The interiors are a bit of an ode to nature: all pared-back muted colours, soft lighting, natural materials and subtle prints nodding to Rafael’s Brazilian heritage. It’s sleek but relaxed, a space that whispers quiet luxury to let the star of the show – the food – do the talking.
We tucked into a variety of canapes, from delicate slivers of mackerel with chick pea and crème fraiche to gribiche-dressed Russian salad with dots of egg yolk gel – a tantalising taste of what’s to come. Washed down with excellent English sparkling wine and some expertly mixed double-rum Tide cocktails, we reckon they’re on to a winner.
Marea opens on Wednesday 10th September.
