five things to do this weekend

We can hardly believe we’re already halfway through May (regularly asked question to which we don’t have an answer: why is all the best stuff crammed into one single month of the year?), at this rate, we’ll be on the countdown to Christmas. But before then, there’s still loads to look forward to, not least all the fun stuff going on this weekend…

Check out the new residencies at Shelter Hall
Shelter Hall food market has been one of our favourite places since it opened. Not only have you got epic views, but it’s a godsend if you’re with a group who have completely different food tastes as there are just so many options. And now, with several new kitchens on board, it’s even more enticing/a minefield for the terminally indecisive. Kenny Tutt’s Ox Block has moved, to be replaced with his tasty burger concept, Patty Guy. Korean brand Tiger and Rabbit are also new: chef creator Jay Morjaria is bringing all of the flavour with BBQ meat and tofu baps, noodle salads and more; Salt Shed’s Sear by Salt are serving up expertly seasoned grilled meats (pictured); and, if you’re after the ultimate in fried chicken burgers and wings (and vegan chicken!), you’ll want to order from Chick Chick Crew, the new concept from the ever-brilliant Lost Boys Chicken. Bon appétit!

See the last days of an exhibition at a new gallery
Brighton-based artist Faye Bridgewater’s exhibition is on until Sunday, 22nd May at gorgeous new art space, The Gallery Muse. Her paintings are inspired by the Sussex coastline and countryside and explode with colour and joy. If the rain returns this weekend (which, let’s face it, is pretty likely), head here to see her uplifting work and you’ll soon have a smile on your face again.
Until Sunday, 22nd May; 10am – 5pm
22 Spring Street, Brighton BN1 3EF

it's ok the dance space performance

Discover Brighton’s new home for dance with your kids
Looking for something to do with your little one this weekend? Well, look no further. South East Dance are presenting It’s ok at their swanky new home for dance in Brighton – The Dance Space. Performed uniquely in a perspex box (think David Blaine but ten times more engaging), It’s ok is a dance piece created especially for children aged five and under. Follow Laura on a journey of discovery as she navigates feelings of uncertainty, fear, excitement, anger and joy. Join the performers as they discover no feelings are right or wrong; they’re just feelings and it really is ok to feel them all. The Dance Space doesn’t officially open to the public until July, so this is a great opportunity to have a sneak peak inside. Looking for more Fringe recommendations? These are our current top picks.
Saturday, 21st May; 11am and 1.30pm; from £8

Visit a community festival
The St Ann’s Well Gardens Spring Festival is back! This central Hove park (feature image) is lovely in its own right, but it’s all the more worth a visit when this free festival is on. There’s live music all day – party-rockers Dub Pistols are headlining at 6.30pm (yep, it’s an early one) – food from around the world, a craft market from local designers and creators, plus a whole host of fun activities, from kids boxing to samba dancing and beer and Pimms tents. (Drinking’s an activity, right?) Basically, there’s something to suit all little and not-so-little ones.
Saturday, 21st May; 11am – 7.30pm; free

kemp town secret garden

Discover a secret garden in town
We love it when we uncover somewhere that’s been right under our nose but we’ve somehow missed. This Kemp Town slice of heaven in garden form is exactly that. Run by the Antony Dale Trust (Dale founded the Regency Society), the beautifully planted walled garden holds temporary sculpture exhibitions – this spring/summer’s major pieces celebrate trees and seeds – while Brighton caterers Table serve up tasty sweet and savoury homemade treats. We’d highly recommend their indulgent sticky toffee cake and wild garlic and cheese scones (we even went back for more to take home) to savour from one of the tables dotted around the garden. Positively idyllic.
Open Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays until 5th June; 11am – 5pm
Bristol Gardens, Kemp Town, Brighton BN2 5JE
