10 Things to do this weekend | 2nd – 4th June

The sun is well and truly OUT this Saturday and Sunday, the first weekend of June (how did that happen?), so it’s the perfect time to get out and about and enjoy it. We’re also sad to say it’s the last weekend of the Fringe, but we’ve got the lowdown on the shows you should still try and see, as well as plenty of other ideas to explore. Don’t forget the SPF! 1. See the must-see show that combines Norse mythology and pro-wrestling Mythos: Ragnarok is an epic dark comedy combining Norse mythological storytelling with full-contact wrestling. Join Odin and Loki in their struggle to overcome primeval giants, rival gods and goddesses, and each other’s ambitions in this hard-hitting, dark comic adaption of Norse mythology. Weaving ancient myths, legends and folk tales into original pieces of theatre, Mythos uses a cast of actors who specialise in professional wrestling to create some of the most intense and thrilling fight scenes ever seen in theatre. This is a rollicking, energetic, high-octane, high camp show which we’d recommend even to the most sceptical viewer. It’s such a great opportunity to snap up great art – including several sale exclusives – at really good prices direct from the artist. We’d recommend getting there early to minimise queue time and don’t forget to go and change up some money – it’s much quicker to go to Enter Gallery (13 Bond Street) before the sale opens to do this. Head to a glamorous charity cabaret extravaganza If you love a bit of cabaret, you’re in for a treat as the third instalment of All That Bex’s Extravangaza is here with another jam-packed night of comedy, burlesque and drag, a perfect Fringe finale. Hosted by Stella Pint, you’ll see over 10 acts on the night – there’s drag from Dolly Trolley and Miss Ruby V, burlesque from Ida Sanguine, stand-up from Mike Lyon, plus comedy and drag from the inimitable Brandy Bex – she’s a nurse, you know – and heaps more. You’ll ooh, ahh and laugh a lot. Basically, you can expect a great night out (we know because we went to the last one and had a blast). Don’t miss the last days of this smart and witty improvised musical Another one not to miss this weekend is Bla Bla Land, a joyful homage to the Oscar-winning La La Land. The performance is audience-led, taking the cast on an unscripted musical adventure night after night. We weren’t expecting it to be, but it was definitely our highlight of ‘23. So leave your troubles at the door and go and see the show at Caravanserai for an evening of whimsical, Oscar-inspired, musical escapism. Lovely stuff. Go on an audio trail to explore the city and support a wonderful charity The Fringe may be ending this weekend, but there’s still time to explore the city in a different way and through different eyes. Hidden: Brighton is a youth-led audio trail in collaboration with local sound artists. It takes listeners on a tour around familiar places in the city, introducing you to young people experiencing homelessness and allowing you to get to know them through their thoughts, ideas and musings on life. What’s more, the proceeds from every ticket purchase goes towards the work of Brighton-based charity Clock Tower Sanctuary that supports these young people.Any time; from £3Tickets available here 6. Go for a swim at Sea Lanes You might have missed it, but there’s a new swimming pool in town… Yep, the 50-metre pool at Sea Lanes, aka the National Open Water Swimming Centre, is now officially open for business (details on what to expect and how to book here). Heated to a relatively balmy 19C, it makes for a refreshing dip and, let’s face it, the views are pretty damn decent, too. We’d recommend a yoga class at Luna Wave followed by a swim, then, once you’ve worked up an appetite – it’s amazing how quickly you forget how much more knackering it is to swim 50 metres in one go than 25 metres – head next door to Fika for a filthy egg sarnie or one of their new toasts (the Fika Beans are seriously good) or on to Bison for a few cold ones and some of the best sea views in town. Or get thee to a lido If you can’t get into Sea Lanes and don’t fancy the sea at the moment, then it’s worth trying one of our beautiful local lidos. Both the beautiful Art Deco Saltdean Lido and the spring-fed Pells Pool in Lewes have opened for the season and Saltdean has tables and chairs by the pool to soak up the rays. (There’s the sea, too, of course – just check the Surfers Against Sewage pollution maps before heading in.) Times and prices vary 8. Indulge your senses at a jazz BBQ Looking for an alternative to a Sunday roast? Then you’ll love this. Indian street food kitchen Easy Tiger (you’ll find them in The Hampton pub) is now hosting an Indian-style BBQ in its colourful outdoor space on Sundays. They’ve even created a special BBQ area – the Tiger Pit. Make a splash at a full moon event Somehow it’s that time again, full moon time! Celebrate this month’s strawberry moon with ethical swimwear brand Ruby Moon Swim and Yoga in the Lanes for their popular swim, paddle, yoga and dance event (pick the ones you fancy!) on the beach. Add this comedy set in a chip shop to your list Set in a Brighton chippy and billed as an "absurd musical comedy about family, fears and fish and chips", Frydays sounds right up our chip butty alley so we’ve popped it on our list of weekend watches. It’s performed by just two actors who play twins (and everyone else) who handle the death of their dad in a slightly unusual manner – they lock themselves in a freezer where they act out stories to entertain themselves and block out the real world.
