swag: the ultimate great escape

Did we mention the fact that next week our favourite month of the year kicks off in Brighton? Well, we’ll say it again, because not only have we got Brighton Festival, Brighton Fringe and the Artists’ Open Houses, but we also play host to one of the best new music festivals in the world. Brighton & Hove, MAMA Festivals are back with The Great Escape for their 14th three-day party. And we can’t wait.

So, guess how we’re celebrating? In a right royal weekend style fashion, that’s how, as we’re offering one lucky winner (and their friend) the chance to win the ultimate Great Escape experience. You could bag two full tickets to The Great Escape festival (Thursday 9th to Saturday 11th May – worth £75 a pop), a two-night stay at the beautifully refurbished Mercure hotel on the seafront (Friday 10th and Saturday 11th May), a meal for two at newly opened Honest Burgers and a £100 bar tab to enjoy over the weekend at Merkaba, which is right in the heart of the festival. How amazing does that sound?

Join The Great Escape
If you haven’t bagged yourself a ticket for the three-day festival yet, then this is the competition for you. Your weekend tickets will give you access to the event that will be showcasing over 500 emerging artists from all over the world in more than 30 walkable venues across the city, including the Brighton Beach site that was new for 2018 (fingers crossed for sunshine!). It’s the best place to discover your new favourite artists in an often teeny-tiny intimate venue before they go on to become headliners! Last year an unexpected highlight for us was Amyl and the Sniffers. Give them a Google and you’ll find out why… What’s more, we’ll be keeping BOTI readers up to date with new announcements and secret gigs in the run-up to, and during, the festival, so you can come back here for your ultimate line-up recommendations. Still not sure what to expect? This will give you a taster…

A seaside sleep at the new-look Mercure
Mercure Brighton Seafront Hotel has undergone a £3 million-pound transformation of its 116 guest rooms and fab hotel space and, guess what, it’s ready just in time for the festival month. Launching this week, we’re pretty sure you’ll be able to get a good night’s sleep at the end of both Friday and Saturday festival days, ready to enjoy the city all over again the next day. The lucky winner will have a complimentary stay in a newly refurbished double room on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th May. The new look was led by local Hove-based interior designer, Helen Hooper, and sees a little bit of Brighton’s history in every room. We’d recommend tucking into one of their new cocktails and checking out their art-filled lobby if you need some chill time in between gigs!

Rock out with your burger out
Honest Burgers recently opened on Duke Street as a bit of a home-coming for founders Tom and Phil, as they came up with the idea when they worked together at Brighton institution, Riddle & Finns. Serving up their first burgers on a street food stand at the Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival in 2010, nine years later they are back where they belong and we’re pretty happy about that! You’ll tuck into a meal for two on them (that’s two burgers, chips, sides and two rounds of any beers, cocktails, soft drinks or glasses of wine!), so you can sample what the burgerlicious fuss is all about. Known for their incredible Beyond Meat vegan burger, there are plenty of meat options on the menu too. Izzy makes a killer Honest gin & tonic (yes, they have their own gin!) and there’s The Duke, too, a tasty pale ale brewed by the local lovelies at Holler Brewery.

Cocktail pit stop at Merkaba
You’ll be able to work your way through the quirky cocktail list at Merkaba, located next to The Great Escape press hub and at the heart of Jubilee Street where some of the street gig magic happens during the festival. Merkaba is open until 1.00am Thursday and Friday or 2.00am on Saturday and they have a few surprise live gigs up their sleeves over the TGE weekend too (more to come on this!). Pitch yourself up at the bar and chat to the friendly team about their signature cocktails, beers and wines available at the interesting cave-like space. They are treating you to a £50 bar spend on both the Friday and Saturday of the festival.
