May is possibly the best month of the year in Brighton – there’s a multitude of festivals to enjoy and it’s about now that the sun finally sheds its cloudy shroud. And it seems like one of our favourite cocktail bars, B.Y.O.C., feels the same way as they’ve launched a special 2-for-1 mid-week offer for the duration of the Brighton Festival and the Brighton Fringe.
If you’re new to BYOC, you’re in for a treat. They don’t sell alcohol in this cosy Prohibition-style bar; instead, you bring your own – BYOC, Bring Your Own Cocktail. Anything you like – the remnants of that sherry you bought for your grandmother, that almost-full bottle of tequila you can no longer stand the sight of, you get the picture. Whatever you bring (and we mean whatever, we have brought some seriously nasty stuff with us in the past), the expert mixologists will use their incredible array of home-made syrups, bitters, herbs and purées to transform it from unloved spinster spirit to a deliciously unique cocktail (or three) in the shake of a lamb’s tail. Er, we mean, cocktail shaker.
Your entry fee covers all your drinks and guarantees you a table in the deceptively large three-floor bar. A word to the wise: don’t give up if you can’t find the entrance right away, it looks like an empty shop for a reason! Trust us, it’s worth the walking round in circles once you’re inside: the atmospheric lighting, antique furniture and powerful cocktails will transport you right back to the ’20s.
