see the star-studded ‘hairspray’ stage show for free this weekend

So many of our favourite cultural institutions are at it! Streaming their productions for free, that is.

The National Theatre’s airing some of its best-loved productions (it’s the timely This House this week) while you can get your Shakespeare fix via the Royal Shakespeare Company’s online options or The Globe’s at home channel. But what if you’re missing musical theatre?

YouTube channel The Shows Must Go On has been streaming a whole heap (what’s the collective noun for theatre shows?) of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s masterpieces and other musical theatre spectaculars.

This weekend is the turn of feel-good hit Hairspray. If you need perking up, then we’d highly recommend kicking back and letting the cast take you back to the world of 60s Baltimore, where inspiring teen Tracy Turnblad wins a much-coveted spot on a local TV dance show and kickstarts a campaign to put an end to segregation on the programme. It’s an uplifting watch, especially in a week of so much dreadful news.

Starring Ariana Grande, Jennifer Hudson, and the inimitable Harvey Fierstein as Edna, it’s got a great message as well as being a true celebration of the power great music and dance. Just try to stop your feet tapping.

You’ll be able to watch the stage show for free for 48 hours after it goes up at 7.00pm this Friday evening.

And if you’d like to buy it (or any of the other musicals that have been streamed on the channel, e.g. the big ones like Joseph, Phantom, etc.) to watch later, you can do so here from YouTube movies.

Watch the musical here.

Hairspray, Friday 29th May, 7.00pm – available for 48 hours
