To get us all in the mood for the spooky season, Be At One bar has launched its ‘Turnip Turn Up’ drinks campaign and yes, as the name suggests, all you have to do is literally turn up with a turnip to bag your free Halloween cocktail.
Get your delicious freak on with You Ain’t Got No Fangs, a dark and stormy whiskey and coffee blend with a hint of cherry and cardamom or Evil Eye, which mixes Patron Silver tequila with fiery hot chilli bitters, a pear blend and Midori (it gives the drink a bitter yellow colour – spooky!) There’s also the Zombie Apocalypse, which blends three types of Bacardi rum with grenadine, fresh citrus and a hit of the old green fairy, aka absinthe. And, finally, you could take a risk with the Lethal Injection, a potent combo of Bombay Sapphire gin with the unspecified ‘Lethal Mix’ (erm, yum?) and a syringe full of Chambord.
Gimmicky it may be, but your roots won’t be given in vain – all turnips brought in will be donated to soup kitchens and homeless shelters.
And in case you’re wondering why the turnip they chose, er, turnips, they wanted to go back to the roots (tee hee) of the Jack O’ Lantern tradition as, apparently, that used to be people’s veg of choice for carving out to make lanterns. That’s before they figured out that pumpkins were a lot easier to get a knife into, of course.
