Things to do this weekend | 6th – 8th September

Welcome to another edition of BOTI’s weather updates, sorry, er, weekend guide. So, technically, it’s still summer until 22nd September although it doesn’t look like the weather got the memo. Still, a bit of a rain never stopped us so we’re heading into another weekend of festivally, foodie, building-y fun replete on excellent gelato (gianduja if you’re asking) from new Italian cafe Palladino’s on St James Street.

Get your festival on at the Lagoon

Local legend Fatboy Slim (together with comedian Zoe Lyons) will be back at Hove Lagoon this Saturday as he opens the popular festival organised by the Friends of Hove Lagoon. They’ve got one hell of a family-friendly day planned, with heaps of stalls selling local products (including food and drink, of course), live comedy and music, a tombola, and plenty of activities for kids to get stuck into, too. Any fluff fans can enter the ‘Coastway Vets Dog Show’ on the day to show off their pooch and Brighton artists, such as Cassette Lord and Pauly The Painter, will be doing live art on the day. If you’ve a penchant for the food at the Ginger Pig just up the road, then you’ll want to get involved in the grand raffle, as there’s a chance to win vouchers, as well as lunch with Norman Cook, watersports courses, and lots more local goodies.

Beautify your skin

You may have missed out on the opening day goodie bag this week, but it’s still worth heading over to Pure Seoul, Brighton’s new Korean skincare shop on the site of the old Kurt Geiger store. If you’re after ‘glass skin’ (who isn’t), then K-beauty is the holy grail and this new shop (the brand’s fourth in the UK) has got all of the hottest launches to come out of the country and really helpful friendly staff.

Have a nosy around town with heritage open days

If you like having a peek at other people’s pads then you won’t want to miss the Heritage Open Days. For nine days in September, heaps of buildings and areas in the city, many of which aren’t usually fully accessible to the public, swing open their doors and let you have a look around. This weekend you can check out the old underground air raid shelter at Downs Junior School and take a tour around the iconic seafront Embassy Court building (worth it for the views from the 11th-floor sun terrace alone) for starters. Get booking – surprisingly, there were still a few spots left at the time of writing, but be quick, they don’t hang around long!

Fill your face with burgers

It’s getting to that time of year when we’re craving burgers even more than usual. Luckily for all of us, there are two new specials in town and they’d be right up there on our ‘best burgers in town’ list if we’d finished writing it. So, burger-loving Brightoners, add these to you must-eat lists this month: First up, the Yeastie Boys Pizza Club collab with Patty & Bun – a messily delicious pizza-topped burger, no less. Don’t hang around though, it’s only available for September (you can win your fill of them here). Next up is a Brighton special – Honest Burgers collab with Unbarred Brewery – and one of the best burgers we’ve had in a while. Happy burgering!

Get outta town

We’ve been talking a bit more about Worthing in recent months because, let’s be honest, it’s got pretty good. As well as some great breweries, restaurants and shops, this Saturday celebrates one of our favourite things to do (yes, eat and drink) with the Worthing Food and Drink festival. Organised by the Worthing Town Centre Business Improvement District (the equivalent of our Brilliant Brighton), it’s one of the town’s annual foodie highlights as the dog-friendly event brings together over 60 indie food and drink brands. You’ll find chef demos, a mini farmer’s market, live local music and other entertainment. And if you’re heading westwards, the 10-day street food and drink festival in the pretty village of nearby Steyning is also well worth a look.

And there’s more…

Ahead of the new film about Lee Miller that’s out next week, the artist’s granddaughter is hosting a four-course surrealist dinner based on Lee’s recipes at the gorgeous Star in Alfriston on Friday. Unbarred Brewery are celebrating 10 years of their biz (10!) with free beers (if you’re early), free cake, games and tunes on Friday (from 5pm at the taproom). Need a break from late-night clubbing? Then check out Brighton Sundae, an afternoon-early-evening club (Sunday; 1-7pm) playing an eclectic mix of funk, afrobeat and electronica with a dance workshop thrown in. For more music on Sunday evening, head to Komedia to see folky singer-songwriter Dawn Landes – if you’re a fan of shows like House, The Good Wife or Gossip Girl you’ll probably recognise some of her songs (£17) or The Green Door Store to see Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier (£13.75). Natural wine fans can get their pet-nat-loving selves along to the Brighton Natural Wine Fair on Saturday (there are still a few tickets left for the early session or you can get them on the door) and, if you happen to be London-bound that day, check out our sister brand LOTI’s Pet Nat Party. And, if you’re into your bikes (or just like admiring them en masse), this Sunday is the Ace Cafe Reunion – bikes, beats and more. It’s apparently the world’s coolest motorcycle event, so there you go. And if you’re one of the first 30 people at The Brighton Box Gallery on Sunday (they open at 10am), you’ll bag yourself a free gift!

Coming up next week…

Indulge all your senses at a Sip and Sniff event next Thursday – perfume, grazing boards and wine. Yep, Nancy Meiland perfumes have teamed up with neighbours Lost in the Lanes and Stopham Vineyard for the special event (£20; email events@lostinthelanes.com to book). And if you want to exercise those vocal chords outside of the comfort of your own home, the new term at community choir Local Vocal starts on Thursday (£10 drop in) too. New band We are Kiioto (with Lamb’s Lou Rhodes and Urban Cookie Collective’s Rohan Heath) are playing their dreamy melodies at The Old Market on Tuesday (£18).
