Dig out your sharpest threads, stick something fabulous on your head – it’s Ladies’ Day at Brighton Racecourse.
Sure, it’s not quite Ascot, but day two of the three-day Festival of Racing is the one time of the year when the fashion rivals the horses for attention. Think bold frocks, sky‑high headpieces and maybe even a flutter that actually pays off.
But it’s not just about people-watching (although that alone’s worth the ticket price). There’s music from Fatboy Tim (no prizes for guessing who that’s a tribute to), a roaming band, hook a duck and coconut shys, photo opps galore, fizz, food and, of course, heaps of flat racing action.
Post‑race, the party shifts to Tide Beach Club from 7pm, where racegoers get a free drink with their ticket – perfect for toasting your winnings or softening the blow.
Speaking of those fancy frocks, though, it’s worth going all out as there’s £250 up for grabs for the best-dressed racegoer. Reckon you’ve got it going on? Head to the flower wall to have your picture taken when you get there or maybe you’ll catch the eye of the style-spotter in the crowd.
So how can you improve your chances of scooping the prize? Basically, it’s go big or go home. As stylist Sarah Kate Byrne says, you’ve got to be brave:
“For me, a winning look typically has a terrific hat or headpiece that sets it off and ensures you stand out from the crowd.”
If you don’t happen to have a suitable hat just hanging around your wardrobe waiting for its chance to shine, no problem. Make one, buy one of Fumbalina’s epic headpieces or Lucy Kook’s fantastical creations, for example, or even rent one – sustainable and chic.
Sarah Kate recommends trying The Cotswold Hat Club, Lizzie’s Hats and The Hat Club for a top selection of millinery for hire.
Be warned, though: finalists get beamed onto the big screen before the final judging in the Parade Ring. Not one for shy and retiring.
Place your bets – the race is on!
