It’s official: Brighton’s getting its very own Ikea – and you won’t have to trek out to Croydon for your flat-pack fix. The Swedish homeware giant opens the doors to its shiny new two-storey spot in Churchill Square on Thursday 14th August, taking over the huge unit left empty since Debenhams left in 2021.
If you’ve popped into the small Ikea store in the West Mall lately, you’ve already had a sneak peek at what’s coming. The pop‑up – stocked with about 150 home‑furnishing bits and bobs, plus a handy parcel collection point – has been quietly giving locals a taste of what’s to come since it opened in April. It’s shutting up shop on 10th August to make way for the main event.
At 6,695 square metres (yep, that’s a lot of tealights), it’s one of Ikea’s new smaller, city-centre formats rather than the giant out-of-town warehouse style.
Churchill Square’s new owners, Ingka Centres (aka Ikea’s parent company), snapped up the shopping centre last year for a cool £145 million – so you could say they were pretty confident they’d find a use for the space.
It also means the much‑loved (and much‑questioned) Lancing mega‑Ikea plans are officially dead in the water – but Brighton gets the win. Expect plenty of jobs, a stack of new meatball opportunities, and an interior design playground right in the middle of town.
The current Ikea pop‑up in Churchill Square will shut up shop on 10th August to make way for the main event. Clear your diary for opening day – those flat-pack bookcases won’t build themselves.
