things to do this halloween week

It’s the scariest time of the year (well, if we completely discount all those political events which shall not be named, that is) and we are ready for it!  We’ve rounded up our top Halloween event picks, from those that will give you the merest shimmer of a fright and others that are right up there at the top of the scare-o-meter. How much do YOU dare this week?

It’s a dead cert
The Mesmerist and Cazcabel Tequila have joined forces to sidestep Halloween and embrace its not-quite-cousin the Day of the Dead again this year. There will be games and surprises galore with Mexican bingo (admittedly, we’re not entirely sure how this differs from non-Mexican bingo) and wheel of fortune, not to mention all the fun Mexican prizes to be won. Candy skull face painting is also on offer to get you looking the part while you dance to live music from The Black Kat Boppers followed by a spicy eclectic set from Soul Casserole. We should also tell you there’s a bottle up for grabs for the best dressed, so get on it!
Saturday 2nd November, 8.00pm – 3.00am; from £5
The Mesmerist, 1-3 Prince Albert Street, Brighton BN1 1HE

I ain’t afraid of no ghosts

We’ve told you about the brilliant (i.e. properly terrifying) events that take place at what may be Brighton’s most haunted house before. And now you can chance your arm (not literally) at Preston Manor at an escape room-style adventure courtesy of Pier Pressure Brighton. Here’s the deal: the Lord and Lady of the Manor have passed away, but their will and some legendary treasure has completely vanished. Your mission is to assist a top detective in solving the case and find the missing treasure. The immersive journey takes you around the beautiful manor rooms solving puzzles and challenges that bring their stories and former inhabitants to life. Keep an eye out for those ghosts, though!
Until 3rd November, slots between 11.00am and 7.00pm; from £20
Preston Manor, Preston Drove, Brighton BN1 6SD

Death defying
They wowed us with Dracula and now Truestory theatre company are back with a bold, haunting new adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The atmospheric Spire in the beautiful St Mark’s Chapel is the perfect venue for the classic gothic horror that explores obsession, creation and compassion, while asking what it actually means to be human.
Until Saturday 9th November, from £13.65

Shock shock horror horror

It wouldn’t be this time of year without the legendary Shocktober Fest at Tulleys Farm. There are 10 immersive (and we mean immersive) scare experiences – each with live actors – to choose from, graded according to just how terrifying they are, as well as street theatre shows, live music and more. We can tell you that if you like your scares extra punchy, then you’ll especially love the chill-inducing Cellar and who or what it holds… Less terrifyingly, if you head down on Saturday for the finale night, you’ll be able to enjoy some extra bangs for your buck courtesy of the closing fireworks display.
Until Saturday 2nd November, various times, from £12 (fast-track tickets allow you to queue jump, so it makes planning a bit easier)
Shocktober Fest Scream Park, Tulleys Farm, Turners Hill Road, Turners Hill, Crawley, West Sussex, RH10 4PE
(get a fast-track ticket if you can, it makes everything run a bit more smoothly)

Gloriously eclectic cafe and light bar Munchies’ Craft is hosting Halloween in Neons this Thursday, inviting everyone to mix and match with their beautiful neon light art by dressing up in neon clothes and make-up.  There will be suitably scary DJ sets from Eggs Legs and Monica, as well as a free drink with every ticket. We always knew all those highlighters would come in handy one day!

Spooked in the city
Brighton is going all out this Halloween. If you’re looking to get some good snaps, then don’t miss the Upside Down House‘s new interior redesign – it’s been transformed into a spooky abode for this week. Crazy golf fans should head down to glow-in-the-dark crazy golf haven Globalls at the Marina where the Jurassic course has gone full-on spook for the occasion (until 5th November). And, if you’re in town on Thursday evening, head down to iconic seafront hotel The Grand at 6.00pm to see it turn luminescent orange just for Halloween – the Royal Pavilion is one of the few other landmarks to be  getting the jack-o’-lantern treatment!
