BOTI Reviews | Felix & Friends at The Walrus

Tucked beneath The Walrus pub in Brighton, a hidden gem awaits: a lush cabaret club with velvet booths, a dedicated bar, and an intimate stage perfect for revelry. While Brighton bursts with creativity every May during the Fringe Festival, the city offers soul-nourishing drag, comedy, and cabaret year-round if you know where to look.

On a buzzing Wednesday evening, we found ourselves in this secret haven for Felix & Friends, a sold-out variety show boasting a rambunctious audience of all ages. Promising a delightful mix of drag, comedy, music, and general mischief, the night delivered charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent in spades, topped off with a dash of Brighton eccentricity.

Felix Le Freak, Brighton Drag Idol winner and our charismatic host, anchored the evening with warmth, quick wit, and an infectious energy that kept the crowd engaged from start to finish. Beyond emceeing, Felix dazzled as a performer, giving the audience a peak ‘behind the curtain’ at a brand-new number.

Their original number, ‘Murder in the Dressing Room’ – written just 24 hours earlier – was a particular highlight, blending camp theatrics with clever wordplay into a polished pop number. Catchy, filthy, and undeniably hilarious, it’s a testament to Felix’s creative brilliance. If this wasn’t enough, their witty, rap-infused verses and tongue-in-cheek humour ensured the audience was in stitches.

Excitingly, Felix & Friends will begin a monthly residency at The Walrus starting 7th February, 2025. In the meantime, fans can catch Felix in action at Ironworks Studios for a festive special on 14th December.

The evening was a kaleidoscope of talent, each act offering something utterly unique. Brighton sparkled as a line-up of dazzling performers served up an unforgettable mix of comedy, cabaret, and clowning:

Daphne: An international cabaret sensation and trans icon, Daphne opened the show with a riot of camp glamour and unapologetic irreverence. Her impeccable lip-syncing, set to a hilariously cheeky Weakest Link soundtrack, was brimming with charisma and sass. She owned the stage with every gesture and wink, leaving the audience in awe.

Gem the Clown:  The small but mighty Gem combines drag, neo-burlesque, and clowning into a whimsical, glitter-drenched performance. With a rhinestone-studded grin and a mischievous charm, Gem proved why they’re a deserving winner of Brighton’s Big Drag Pageant. Their artistry is as quirky as it is captivating.

Sallyann Fellowes: A multi-award-winning comedian, Sallyann delivered a set that sparkled with wit and authenticity. As a queer, neurodiverse voice, she masterfully transformed life’s peculiarities into comedic gold. Her sharp observations and relatable humour – polished by her win at Leicester Square New Comedian of the Year 2023 – kept the audience roaring with laughter.

Nicky Vere-Compton: Bringing anarchic energy and a powerhouse baritone, Nicky blended musical comedy with biting stand-up. As a self-proclaimed “short, fat, autistic queer,” their performance radiated authenticity and humour, leaving an indelible mark on the audience.

Mikee Martelle: A Brighton stand-up favourite, Mikee closed the show with audacious tales of love, loss, and lust. His vivid storytelling and razor-sharp delivery showcased why he’s a beloved fixture in the local comedy circuit.

Felix & Friends is a joyous celebration of queer creativity and community, offering a refreshing mix of polished acts and anarchic fun. With its eclectic roster and Felix’s incomparable charm at the helm, this show promises to remain a jewel in Brighton’s cabaret scene. Don’t miss their monthly residency starting February 2025.
