brighton festival to go ahead on 1 May

We’re liking this month so far. First there was news that The Great Escape would go ahead online, then Pride was confirmed and now, May is looking even rosier as Brighton Festival has said the 54th edition will go ahead with both live and online events.

Admittedly, it’s not going to be quite the same as usual because groups still won’t be allowed to gather by that date, but with author, poet and broadcaster Lemn Sissay MBE returning to curate, we’re looking forward to a great programme.

For the first part of the month, the Festival organisers say events will take place online and in “unusual outdoor pop-up locations”, but when lockdown restrictions ease on 17th May, socially distanced live performances will be able to return in venues across the city.

“We have been planning for a Festival full of beauty and fun that can still happen with social distancing in place,” said Andrew Comben, the Festival’s chief executive.

“We believe we can deliver a carefully managed, safe and responsible events programme that will help build confidence with our audiences to bring them back to what they love,” he said.

More will be revealed when the programme is released online on Tuesday, 30th March…
