The chilli pickle launches singaporean pop-up

You’ve probably seen The Hawkerman teasers all over social media for the past few weeks (shout out to Brighton design agency Good Noise for the gorgeous branding). But the secret’s finally out: it’s a new pop-up venture by the same team behind Brighton’s fabulous Indian restaurant The Chilli Pickle, Alun and Dawn Sperring. Yes!

With its name a tribute to the bustling hawker kitchens in Singapore and South-East Asia, Hawkerman can be found in a specially designed 28-cover section of The Chilli Pickle on Jubilee Square.

“We’ve travelled a lot around South-East Asia and are in awe of these incredibly skilled cooks [the hawkers] who spend decades honing one ostensibly simple dish – which customers will form long queues to eat,” said chef and co-owner Alun.


“With Hawkerman, we set ourselves a bit of a challenge – creating our own interpretation of some of these time-honoured specialities, using the best local produce we can get,” he added.

The full menu’s available on the website now and it’s safe to say there are some pretty exciting options, not least the return of the glorious Singapore fish head curry they cooked up in their Singaporean menu for last year’s OctoberBEST. The main image is the Korean dragon foo ramyun and below is the Canton BBQ sunshine chicken with flash fry greens and jasmine rice. Yum. Happily, there are plenty of vegan and veggie options, too.


They’re only opening for lunch initially, but we understand this may change if the concept proves popular (which we reckon it definitely will!). Don’t worry, though, the Chilli Pickle isn’t going anywhere and will still be operating its own menu as normal.

We’re not sure how long Hawkerman is popping up for, so we’d get in there soon just in case if we were you!
