Foodie happenings to have on your radar

More food? Yes, please. Here’s our short-and-sweet round-up of food and drink happenings that have caught our eye.

This weekend

Patio x Ben Lippett x Buetti

This is a big one. Patio is hosting chef (and best-selling author whose career actually started in Brighton) Ben Lippett for one day only on Saturday and the menu is a stunner: think small plates like cuttlefish bolognaise, raw bass with cucumber and pil-pil, and fig leaf and cherry pavlova. But it’s not just about the food. Buetti (aka apparel designers and brothers Lorenzo and Valentino Brunetti) are bringing a capsule collab collection to the little blue bar for the one-day pop-up. You can get your hands on a super-limited and super-cool set of a hand screen-printed tee and bag, wine and a glass to sup it from. Unsurprisingly, bookings disappeared in a flash, but they always take walk-ins, so you won’t miss out.

Nanima becomes Deep Dive

Kemptown’s Nanima Asian Kitchen has transformed into Deep Dive, a jazz and blues bar. They’re kicking things off this weekend with live music and DJs every night. And for lovers of Nanima’s food, the kitchen isn’t disappearing entirely, you’ll still be able enjoy bits and pieces, like home-made cakes and soups and small plates in the evenings. Read more about their next chapter here.

Brighton gets a new Japanese food truck

A brand-new Japanese food truck, Irori, is making its Brighton debut this Saturday, and the pictures alone have us planning lunch. Irori is chef Koji’s new roaming kitchen, built around the simple idea of good Japanese food, charcoal cooking and actually getting to chat to the people eating it.
Sat; 1pm – 6pm; St George’s Church, Kemptown

And here’s a few other things to get booking for…

Weekly deals

Fine-dining restaurant Furna has launched a new concept – Table 35. The idea is that you and up to eight of your pals can book to tuck into 10 seasonal sharing plates for £35 per person every Wednesday and Thursday. They say the plates get more generous the larger the table, but you can also book for just two of you.

Reopenings

Brighton’s hottest reopening is, of course, Kitgum. A week later than planned due to a number of setbacks, not least co-owner Fayaz breaking his ankle, it was well worth the wait. Their new bigger Hampton Place home allows them to really focus on the things that made Kitgum, well, Kitgum: inventive plates inspired by Gujarati, Persian and East African flavours, carefully selected tunes and a warm, communal atmosphere that’s designed to feel more kitchen party than restaurant. And it absolutely succeeds (full review coming soon).

New kids on the block

There’s a(nother) new pizza joint in town

And this is one to get excited about: Stretch is the creation of Brigi Stamber, two-time National Pizza Awards chef of the year, no less. Brigi’s built the restaurant around great food, sustainability and inclusivity and we can’t wait to check it out. Oh, and it’s on Portland Road, which is fast becoming a foodie destination in its own right. Get there this weekend (4th – 6th Sep, take-away only) as after that they’re closing for a couple of weeks to focus on building the restaurant.

Get your bao fix at Baby Bao in Kemptown

It’s been a long time coming, but the team behind the hugely popular Baby Bao residency at The Pond (and Earl’s) have got a permanent home (on George Street) for their inventive steamed buns. Because delicious things come in small, fluffy packages.
