flip out this pancake day

Looking for stacks (of fun) this Pancake Day? Put down the shopping list, step away from the whisk and feast your eyes on these pan-tastic places offering all the pancake-y goodness you need, from finish-at-home boxes to ready-made specials…

Starfish & Coffee
If you haven’t tried the American-style buttermilk pancakes at this BRAVO award-winning cafe yet, you’ve been missing out. They’re not letting lockdown get in the way of spreading the pancake love either – they’re selling their tasty pre-made batter ready for people to flip and fry at home, with topping mixtures that just need warming up. Take your pick from savoury options (ham and cheese, mushroom, spinach and truffle oil, bacon, blueberry and maple syrup) or indulge your sweet tooth with choc chip and caramel, fruit and choc sauce, or Nutella, banana and fruit compote. You don’t even need to trek up Muesli Mountain to get your hands on these pancakes of perfection – you can opt for delivery if you live within two miles.
From £8; for delivery on Monday, 15th February or collection on Tuesday, 16th February

Oui Crêperie
If you’re looking for a little bit of je ne sais quoi with your pancake, then you need a crêpe and Oui Crêperie is your man (with a little blue van). Tossing thin, light and airy crêpes from various spots around the city, you can pick from a variety of sweet and savoury toppings with something to suit all tastes (including gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan options). In honour of the Day of the Pancake, they’ve also created some American specials, which are exclusively available from one of their vans parked up at Hove Park (11am – 7.30pm). Choose from the savoury option of streaky bacon, blueberry compote, maple syrup and icing sugar or Nutella drizzle, strawberries, blueberries and whipped cream. If you’re happy with their normal (and very tasty) crêpe and galette menu, you’ll find them at St Matthias Church in Fiveways on Tuesday between 1pm and 7pm.

Nowhere Man
If you live in Brighton, you can’t talk about pancakes and not mention Nowhere Man in the same sentence. We may not be able to visit their lovely eclectic cafe (which rightly serves up their American-style pancakes all year round) in person right now, but thankfully we can still get our hands on those delicious goods via Deliveroo. Whether you’re looking for a sweet treat or a savoury pancake saviour, there are plenty of options (including vegan and gluten-free). The ones we drool over time and time again are the Chocolate Banana and the Intermediate Pancakes (a three-stack belter with smoked bacon and maple butter), so named because you’ve graduated from the Beginner’s plain stacks with maple butter. If you really want to shake things up, then get stuck into the All American Dream, the perfect hearty combo of all things sweet and savoury.

The Breakfast Club
The Breakfast Club always goes BIG for Shrove Tuesday and this year is no exception, with American pie (the food, not the film!)-themed stacks joining the menu as limited-edition specials. There’s the Damn Fine Cherry Pie with cherry pancakes, cherry compote, cherry ripple, vanilla custard cream and Biscoff crunch and the Mississippi Mud Pie with chocolate pancakes, roasted macadamia nuts, white and dark choc chunks, salted caramel and white choc cream. Prefer to get creative yourself? Then go all out with their ‘yellow box of pancake-filled hope’. The £40 finish-at-home box includes enough secret batter to feed four four, plus a range of toppings, such as choc chunks, cream, salted caramel chocolate ganache, and ginger snap and macadamia nut granola crunch.
From £11; ready-made specials and other pancakes from the Brighton menu are available on Deliveroo

Where The Pancakes Are
When we lived in London (yes, we were one of Them, soz), we were obsessed with this London-Bridge restaurant where every day is Pancake Day. So we’re pretty happy that they are delivering pancake meal kits nationwide. They’ve created some special Pancake Day boxes (how many times can we type pancake in one paragraph?). There are options for meat-eaters, veggies and vegans, all you need to do is choose your meal kit flavour! Take your pick from classic lemon and sugar, salted caramel and banana, or American – gluten-free flour is an option, too. Each box contains absolutely everything you need for six adults (you can always freeze any leftover mix for later). Pancake heaven, here we come.
