book now: fine cider and cheese

Could you imagine popping a cork on a bottle of sparkling cider instead of the prosecco or champers we’re used to when it comes to celebrating? Well, last month we had a glass of the apple-y stuff as part of a pairing at local ‘Sussex on a plate’ restaurant, Isaac At, so we reckon it might be time to consider a more cider-licious future.

And, in terms of venues, where better to taste the stuff than the natural wine haven that is Plateau? They’re hosting an evening of cider tasting and cheese snacking next month with Pommelier (yep, it’s a thing) – and author of Fine Cider – Felix Nash.

Out on 8th October, the book explores the fine cider movement and the people and producers behind it. It’s fair to say that there’s so much more to cider in 2019 than the Strongbow-guzzling days we remember as a student (just us?) or the common faux ‘fruit’ flavours that are far from their originally apple-y goodness. It seems modern cider making is, in fact, about passionate makers that celebrate tradition and terroir while also embracing seasonality, innovation, and experimentation to produce characterful drinks that are different and remarkable.

The book looks at the modern cider movement and guides readers through the characteristics of different apple varieties, the cider-producing regions around the world and the processes and techniques of cider production. If you want to meet the man behind the book and talk apple-y joy over a two-hour tasting of cider and cheese, then this one’s for you. Grab a ticket below and pop Thursday 10th October in your diary.
