superdoux-brighton

The plant-based one
Oh, how we love Superdoux. Their cakes are insanely good and their afternoon teas are completely bespoke, so you can pick and choose from their extensive sweet and savoury menus to create the afternoon tea of your vegan dreams. But if you just can’t decide between the plum frangipane puffs and espresso donuts (ALWAYS both), you can now get a sweet or savoury set menu from £15, including a loose tea of your choice. And if you really want to make a special occasion out of it (if not now, when?!), then you can hire their gorgeous vintage crockery for a fiver, plus deposit.
From £15, for collection or delivery email info@superdoux.com or call 07513977389 to discuss
Superdoux

The boozy one
If we had to be a drink, we’d be a G&T, so we’re all over Metrodeco’s glorious G&Teas, which feature local gins (complete with tonic and garnish) from Madame Jennifer’s or Brighton Gin and your choice of tea. Food-wise, think freshly baked scones with jam and cream, dainty pastries, sweet treats (hello, pistachio and rose cake) and sandwiches with tasty options to suit all dietary preferences. Bonus: they deliver every day except Wednesday and anywhere within a ten-mile radius of Brighton. If you’re missing hanging out in the glorious vintage decadence that is their Kemp Town tea salon, this is the next best thing.
From £22.50 per person for collection (you’ll get a 10% discount if you pick up) or delivery; order by 4pm for next-day delivery; email metrodecodelivery@gmail.com to order

The make-your-own one
Coburn & Baker only did wholesale before the pandemic turned the world as we know it on its head, but luckily for us, they’re now doing retail, too. You’ve probably seen their vans popping up all over the city selling their tasty baked goods. Anyway, they also do rather marvellous bread and cake delivery boxes, which we think are pretty perfect for creating the ultimate afternoon tea/picnic. You can choose from a mixed savoury box (featuring tasty empanadas, boureks, sage rolls and more) to mixed sweet boxes with a whole variety of loaf cakes, gingerbread people – complete with cute and oh-so-apt surgical mask, muffins, granola bars and brownies, with the option to add more bits of your choosing, including great coffee. Plus, they have a brilliant vegan box, and plain bread boxes, too!
From £7, deliveries are made from 9-11am Tuesdays to Saturdays or you can collect in Hove from 10am – 4pm Tuesday to Friday

julien-plumart-brighton

The French one
There’s a place in Brighton that always transports us to Paris and that is the wonderful Julien Plumart. Sadly, we can’t go there at the moment, but we can still enjoy their exquisite patisseries (and their exquisite packaging) from home. And ok, it’s not strictly afternoon tea as you’d have it in their salon, but we are firmly of the persuasion that there is little in life that is not enhanced by the addition of the perfect macaron. Of which Monsieur Plumart is a master. Add in a tasty savoury croissant or a croque, a delectable meringue or two and some devastatingly good-looking pistachio eclairs (not all at the same time, we hasten to mention) and you’ve got yourself a party for your mouth.
From £2, plus delivery; order here from Deliveroo; open from 8am to 4pm

hopping-bakery-brighton

The one for those with a sweet tooth
Ok, it’s not quite an afternoon tea, but The Hopping Bakery’s brownies, sweet treats and cakes are so good, we’re sure you’ll forgive us. Seriously, with brownies with the perfect amount of squidge in a wide range of flavours (we love the Snickers ones in case you wondered), not to mention the vegan chocolate tiffins, Eton mess and peanut butter banoffee pudding dessert jars, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Can’t decide? Go for the mixed variety boxes (plenty of vegan options, too). The only downside is that you have to order in advance – by Friday at 9pm for delivery the following Monday – it’s pretty hard containing the drool until then. (They’re also part of Brighton Street Feast, a great new service delivering tasty reheatable meal and dessert packages from popular local street food traders.)
Boxes from £12; free delivery to Brighton and Hove, enter BNFREE at checkout, deliveries are made on Mondays
