events company launch competition to bring bruno mural back

Back in May, there was widespread dismay among residents, especially Brighton & Hove Albion fans, when the popular mural of Bruno, the Seagulls’ former legendary captain, was painted over. The bearded Spaniard complete with crown had taken pride of place on the side of the North Laine’s Gelato Gusto since 2017, courtesy of Sky Sports who wanted to promote their Premier League coverage. But there’s good news – El Capitán is coming back and you can be part of his return!

Not in the same form, admittedly, but Brighton-based firm The Stag Company have launched a nationwide campaign to find a design for a new mural of the cult hero, which renowned street artist Glimmertwin will paint on a prominent wall in the city. So if you fancy yourself as a bit of an artist or want to share your devotion to the team, you can submit your designs here. Make sure you get them in by 31st October to be in with a chance of making the shortlist, which will be put to a public vote.

The new art will go on a wall owned by the company’s CEO and loyal supporter, Rob Hill, who was very upset when the original was taken down, so should be safe from getting painted over again.

“Bruno is a Brighton and Hove Albion legend and is one of the best players to have ever graced the blue and white stripes.  He played over 200 games for Brighton, was a great captain and leader and deserves to be recognised for everything he has done for the club,” said Hill, adding that this competition was his chance to “give something back to the city and honour a Brighton and Hove Albion legend”.

And Bruno himself, who’s due to retire after the is very much in favour of the campaign: “I am very proud that so many fans want to commemorate my time at BHA and I can only repeat what I said to them when I retired – ‘Once a Seagull, always a Seagull’!”

So come on, let’s bring Bruno back!
