Know your cheese from your châteaux? Your Peep Show quotes from your prime ministers? Then this one’s for you. Brighton’s launching its first-ever Pub Quiz Awards – a citywide celebration of the people who turn your Tuesday night pints into full-scale trivia battles with a side of serious fun.
The awards are shining a light on the quizmasters and question writers who make Brighton’s pub quiz scene one of the most competitive (and creative) in the country. There are categories for Best Quiz, Best Writer, Best Question, and – because Brighton is not just Brighton – separate trophies for BN1, BN2 and BN3, giving every postcode a fighting chance at glory.
Nominations closed at the end of September, and public voting is now in full swing – nearly 2,000 votes have already rolled in as locals back their favourite quiz hosts. The top three in each area will make it to the grand final and awards ceremony at The Mucky Duck on 1st December, where the city’s quiz royalty will be crowned.
The awards – a UK first apparently – are the brainchild of Dean Harrington, who spent the summer calling more than 200 Brighton pubs to track down every active quiz in town (there are about 75 of them, run by 36 quizmasters – so yes, you’ve got options).
Voting runs until 31st October – so if you’ve ever shouted “I told you it was Madagascar!” across a pub table, now’s the time to return the favour and vote for your favourite quizmaster.
