BOTI Reviews | Godz

In the absolute heart of Brighton Fringe, Godz is on in the iconic big top at the SpiegelGardens, where you can grab yourself a drink and a snack before strapping into this unmissable show. Whether you’re ringside or at a cabaret table, the atmosphere of the Spiegeltent is one that promises all the grandeur and spectacle you’d expect from a headline Fringe show.

And then, a blessing! To be in the presence of the Godz themselves! Apollo, Dionysus, Hermes, Cupid… oh, and that demi-god Hercules! Tone and muscle were met with cheers and whoops – you may want to bring a fan… It gets HOT in there.

Going straight in with a three-man tower, a deluge of acrobatics is to follow. Backflips, somersaults, breakdancing? Well, Apollo is the god of dance, too. Totally head spinning; you’re in for a treat. Throw in juggling, knife throwing, and whips (ooh la la), these Godz will keep you on the edge of your seat, or balancing on top of four.

And they’re funny? See, this is why we have unrealistic expectations of men. The absolute level of sass is unmatchable.

During a short interval you can grab a top up or a snack at the bar, but let’s be honest, the best snacks are on the stage. A feast for the eyes as the Godz dish up the second half of the show with the help of some carefully placed golden plates. Eyes on the stage, and hands to yourself, please. Unless of course you’re asked to touch…

From skimpy pteruges (those cute little armour skirts), to torn-off togas (yeah, we know the Greek version is actually himation, but respect the alliteration, alright?), an unexpected array of new characters also boast hunky harnesses and hellish habits. Nuns? Yes. Nuns. And as we finally meet Zeus in a gravity-defying final act, the tent is transformed into a massive party with all your favourite cousins (who you’ll never look at the same way again). Well, when in Rome – um, Athens. Anyway, what happens in the Spiegeltent… stays in the Spiegeltent.

So, relish in the splendour of this divine extravaganza. This is a sell-out event, night after night, so much so they’ve added an extra date. So grab it while you still can, and let Australia’s Head First Acrobats carry you up to Olympus.
